Samuel ( Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל ''Šəmūʾēl'', Tiberian: ''Šămūʾēl'') is a male given name and a surname of Hebrew origin. From its appearance it seems to have the meaning of "God has set" or "God has placed", appearing to derive from the Hebrew Śāmū (שָׂמוּ) + ʾĒl (God has set/placed). The Hebrew śāmū is also related to the Akkadian šâmū (𒊮𒈬), which shares the same meaning. However, from the explanation given in 1 Samuel 1:20, the name would seem to come from a contraction of the Hebrew שְׁאִלְתִּיו מֵאֵל ( Modern: Šəʾīltīv mēʾĒl, Tiberian: Šĭʾīltīw mēʾĒl), meaning "I have asked/borrowed him from God". Samuel Lee Stewart (October 28, 1954 – March 2, 2018) was an American professional baseball player. He pitched in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1978 to 1987. Stewart had the best earned run average (ERA) in the American League (AL) in 1981 and he pitched in the postseason in 1979 and 1983. Samuel Peralta Sosa (born November 12, 1968) is a Dominican-American former professional baseball right fielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 19 seasons, primarily with the Chicago Cubs. Sammy Mandell (a.k.a. Samuel Mandella; February 5, 1904 – November 7, 1967) was an American World lightweight boxing champion from 1926-1930. Born in Rockford, Illinois, and named Salvatore Mandala, he was known as the "Rockford Sheik" due to his Rudolph Valentino like good looks and as the "Rockford Flash" due to his fast hands and foot speed. Sammy Luftspring (May 14, 1916 – September 27, 2000) was a Jewish Canadian boxer. A former Canadian Welterweight Champion and highly ranked in the Welterweight class during his career, Luftspring was forced to retire from the sport due to an eye injury.
