Sabha Airport
Sebha International Airport is an airport serving Sabha, capital of the Sabha District of Libya. The airport is southeast of the city. The airport shares its runway with Sabha Airbase, which has operations on the southwest side of the airport. Plans The airport underwent expansion in the 1970s to make it into an international airport. A LD600 million contract was signed (20 May 2008) with a joint venture comprising Lebanon's CCC and a new Libyan investment and development company for a new passenger terminal at Sabha Airport. Sabha, Libya
Sabha, or Sebha ( ar, سبها, Sebhā), is an oasis city in southwestern Libya, approximately south of Tripoli. It was historically the capital of the Fezzan region and the Military Territory of Fezzan-Ghadames and is now capital of the Sabha District. Sabha Air Base, south of the city, is a Libyan Air Force installation that is home to multiple MiG-25 aircraft. Sabha was where the erstwhile ruler of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, grew up and received secondary education and where he also later became involved in political activism. After the Libyan Civil War and the resultant instability in the country, Sabha reportedly grew in importance as a slave auctioning town. Sabha ( ar, سبها ''Sabhā'') is one of the districts of Libya. It is located near the center of the country, in the Fezzan region. The capital is the city of Sabha. Sabha District borders the following districts, namely, Wadi Al Shatii in the north, Al Jufrah in the east, Murzuq in the south and Wadi Al Hayaa in the west. Per the census of 2012, the total population in the region was 157,747. The average size of the household in the country was 6.9. There were totally 22,713 households in the district, with 20,907 Libyan ones. The population density of the district was 1.86 persons per sq. km. Sabha Airbase (also called Tamanhent Airbase) is a Libyan Air Force base southeast of Sabha, Libya. The airport shares its runway with Sabha Airport. History It used to support the Tupolev Tu-22 bomber, these have been non-operational since at least 1992. Current use Military The base is home to the 1st and 1025th Squadrons of Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 fighter aircraft. It was bombed by coalition aircraft during the 2011 Libyan civil war. Benina International Airport
Benina International Airport ( ar, مطار بنينة الدولي) serves Benghazi, Libya. It is located in the borough of Benina, 19 kilometres (12 mi) east of Benghazi, from which it takes its name. The airport is operated by the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Bureau of Libya and is the second largest in the country after Tripoli International Airport. Benina International is also the secondary hub of both Buraq Air and flag carrier, Libyan Airlines. As of 17 July 2014 all flights to the airport were suspended due to fighting in the area. Railways Libya has had no railway in operation since 1965, all previous narrow gauge lines having been dismantled.
