Concept Car
A concept car (also known as a concept vehicle, show vehicle or prototype) is a car made to showcase new styling and/or new technology. They are often exhibited at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not be mass-produced. General Motors designer Harley Earl is generally credited with inventing the concept car, and did much to popularize it through its traveling Motorama shows of the 1950s. Concept cars never go into production directly. In modern times all would have to undergo many changes before the design is finalized for the sake of practicality, safety, regulatory compliance, and cost. A " production-intent" prototype, as opposed to a concept vehicle, serves this purpose. Design Concept cars are often radical in engine or design. Some use non-traditional, exotic, or expensive materials, ranging from paper to carbon fiber to refined alloys. Others have unique layouts, such as gullwing doors, 3 or 5 (or more) wheels, ...

Saab Automobile
Saab Automobile AB () is a defunct car manufacturer that was founded in Sweden in 1945 when its parent company, Saab AB, began a project to design a small automobile. The first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. In 1968 the parent company merged with Scania-Vabis, and ten years later the Saab 900 was launched, in time becoming Saab's best-selling model. In the mid-1980s the new Saab 9000 model also appeared. In 1989, the automobile division of Saab-Scania was restructured into an independent company, Saab Automobile AB. The American manufacturer General Motors (GM) took 50 percent ownership. Two well-known models to come out of this period were the Saab 9-3 and the Saab 9-5. Then in 2000, GM exercised its option to acquire the remaining 50 percent. In 2010 GM sold Saab Automobile AB to the Dutch automobile manufacturer Spyker Cars N.V. After many years establishing a sound engineering reputation and ultimately a luxury price tag, Saab failed to build i ...

Convertible
A convertible or cabriolet () is a passenger car that can be driven with or without a roof in place. The methods of retracting and storing the roof vary among eras and manufacturers. A convertible car's design allows an open-air driving experience, with the ability to provide a roof when required. A potential drawback of convertibles is their reduced structural rigidity (requiring significant engineering and modification to counteract the effects of removing a car's roof). The majority of convertible roofs are of a folding construction framework with the actual top made from cloth or other fabric. Other types of convertible roofs include retractable hardtops (often constructed from metal or plastic) and detachable hardtops (where a metal or plastic roof is manually removed and often stored in the trunk). Terminology Other terms for convertibles include cabriolet, cabrio, drop top, drophead coupé, open two-seater, open top, rag top, soft top, spider, and spyder. Consisten ...

Saab 9-X Biohybrid
The Saab 9-X Biohybrid concept car was developed by Saab in 2008, and first shown at the Geneva Motor Show. It is based on the GM Delta platform, and was thought to give an idea of the cancelled Saab 9-1X. It has keyless entry and small cameras instead of rear-view mirrors. On the roof, there is a solar panel, like in the Saab EV-1, for charging the battery, both when driving and when parked. The headlights are automatic. A front mounted camera detects if you meet another car. The front of the car follows the design of the Saab Aero-X while the rear has a cut off look, similar to the Saab 9-X. It is powered by a direct injected, E85 flex fuel capable turbocharged inline four cylinder engine of 1.4 liters giving at 5000 rpm and at 1750-5000 rpm. Connected to the engine by a belt is GM's BAS+ hybrid system which can provide a boost up to 19 hp. The engine is connected to a manual six speed gearbox with automatic clutch. 0-100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved in 7.9 seconds and it ha ...

Plug-in Hybrid
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a hybrid electric vehicle whose battery pack can be recharged by plugging a charging cable into an external electric power source, in addition to internally by its on-board internal combustion engine-powered generator. Most PHEVs are passenger cars, but there are also PHEV versions of commercial vehicles and vans, pickup truck, utility trucks, buses, trains, motorcycles, mopeds, and even military vehicles. Similar to battery electric vehicle, all-electric vehicles (BEVs), PHEVs displace greenhouse gas emissions from the car tailpipe exhaust gas, exhaust to the power station generators powering the electricity grid. These centralized generators may be of renewable energy (e.g. solar power, solar, wind power, wind or hydroelectric) and largely emission-free, or have an overall lower emission intensity than individual internal combustion engines. Compared to conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), PHEVs have a larger battery pa ...
