S45 is a line on the Berlin S-Bahn. It operates from Flughafen BER Terminal 1–2 beneath Berlin Brandenburg Airport to Südkreuz over: *a very short section of the Outer ring, opened in 1951 and electrified in 1983, *a short section of the former Outer freight ring opened in the early 1940s and electrified in 1983, *the Görlitz line, opened in 1866 and electrified in 1929, *the Baumschulenweg–Neukölln link line, opened on 8 June 1896 and electrified in 1928 and *the Ring line, completed in 1877 and electrified in 1926. Berlin S-Bahn
The Berlin S-Bahn () is a rapid transit railway system in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under this name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area ''Berliner Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen'' (Berlin city, orbital, and suburban railways). It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. As such, the Berlin S-Bahn blends elements of a commuter rail service and a rapid transit system. In its first decades of operation, the trains were steam-drawn; even after the electrification of large parts of the network, a number of lines remained under steam. Berlin Outer Ring
The Berlin outer ring (german: Berliner Außenring, BAR) is a long double track electrified railway, originally built by the German Democratic Republic to bypass West Berlin in preparation for the building of the Berlin Wall during the division of Germany. It was developed by East Germany for economic, transport policy, and military reasons between 1951 and 1961 and included parts of some older lines ( Outer Freight Ring, Jüterbog–Nauen railway, and Michendorf–Großbeeren railway). Without the completion of the outer ring it would not have been possible to build the Berlin Wall, sealing off West Berlin, without disrupting East Germany’s transport links. The Potsdam-Schönefeld Expressway was built for similar reasons. The term ''Outer ring'' is used to distinguish the line from the Ring line of inner Berlin. Flughafen BER - Terminal 5 Station
Frankfurt-Flughafen is a quarter of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is part of the '' Ortsbezirk Süd'' and is subdivided into the ''Stadtbezirke'' Unterwald and Flughafen. Frankfurt-Flughafen contains the whole airport ground of Frankfurt Airport after which the district is named. With only 218 inhabitants it is the least populated (and least densely populated) district but with 71,500 people employed at about 500 airport companies (2010) it is also the district with the most employees. Waßmannsdorf Station
The Waßmannsdorf station is a stop of the Berlin S-Bahn in Waßmannsdorf in the municipality of Schönefeld on the Grünau Cross–Berlin Brandenburg Airport railway. It was completed in October 2011 and opened on 26 October 2020, five days before Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) opened on 31 October 2020. A railway station already existed in the village from 1951 to 1982. It was not located at the same place and was exclusively a depot ''(Betriebsbahnhof)'' on the Berlin outer ring. Location The station is located about 800 m southwest of the center of Waßmannsdorf. The Berlin Schönefeld Airport (SXF) is about four kilometers away, the new Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg (BER) about one and a half kilometers. Berlin Ringbahn
The Ringbahn (German for circle railway) is a long circle route around Berlin's inner city area, on the Berlin S-Bahn network. Its course is made up of a double-tracked S-Bahn ring and a parallel freight ring. The S-Bahn lines S41 and S42 provide a closed-loop continuous service without termini. Lines S45, S46 and S47 use a section of the southern and western ring, while lines S8 and S85 use sections of the eastern ring. The combined number of passengers is about 400,000 passengers a day. Due to its distinctive shape, the line is often referred to as the ''Hundekopf'' (Dog's Head). The Ringbahn is bisected by an east–west railway thoroughfare called the Stadtbahn (city railway), which crosses the Ringbahn from Westkreuz (Western Crossing) to Ostkreuz (Eastern Crossing), forming a Südring (Southern Ring) and a Nordring (Northern Ring). Baumschulenweg–Neukölln Link Line
The Baumschulenweg–Neukölln link line is a railway line in southern Berlin. It connects the Ring line (''Ring Bahn'') station of Neukölln via Köllnische Heide to Baumschulenweg on the Görlitz line. The line as originally designed only for freight but is now mainly used by Berlin S-Bahn trains. History Installation and electrification The line was built at ground level a single track between 1890 and 1896 and was opened on 8 June 1896. At first, it only served freight, connecting the Görlitz line with the southern Ring line. Beginning in 1910, two separate suburban tracks were laid north of the existing freight track. The entire line was rebuilt on an embankment with bridges over intersecting roads, including ''Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse'' (now Sonnenallee) and ''Kiefholzstraße''. Berlin–Görlitz Railway
The Berlin–Görlitz railway is a main line railway in the German states of Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony, which was originally built and operated by the Berlin-Görlitz Railway Company (''Berlin-Görlitzer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft''). The line runs through Lusatia from Berlin via Cottbus to Görlitz. It is one of the oldest lines in Germany, opened in 1866 and 1867. It was nationalised in 1882 and became part of Prussian state railways. In 1920, it became part of German national railways along with the rest of the Prussian state railways. Route The line runs from Berlin via Königs Wusterhausen, Lübben, Cottbus, Spremberg, Weißwasser and Horka to Görlitz. Outer Freight Ring
The Berlin Outer Freight Ring (German: ''Güteraußenring'', GAR) was a planned ring railway around the city of Berlin, Germany. The first sections of a line to the west of the city were built in the early 20th century as part of the Brandenburg Bypass Railway (''Umgehungsbahn''). Even then, there were plans for a bypass south of Berlin. The first bits were built in the early 1920 and more sections followed in the 1930s. The line could not be completed due to the impact of the Second World War. The completed section consisted of a mainly single-track link running from Teltow to Berlin-Karow to the south and east of Berlin. Berlin Südkreuz station (german: Bahnhof Berlin Südkreuz, lit=Berlin South Cross) is a railway station in the German capital Berlin. The station was originally opened in 1898 and is an interchange station.
