Sydney—Victoria
Sydney—Victoria was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1997 to 2025. It was created in 1996 from parts of Cape Breton—The Sydneys, Cape Breton—East Richmond and Cape Breton Highlands—Canso electoral districts. Its first Member of Parliament (Canada), Member of Parliament (MP) was Peter Mancini and its final MP was Jaime Battiste. After the 2022 Canadian federal electoral redistribution, this district was replaced largely by Sydney—Glace Bay. The new urban district represents most of the former Industrial Cape Breton area. Sydney—Glace Bay ceded most of Cape Breton—Victoria's rural areas to the new Cape Breton—Canso—Antigonish district. Sydney—Victoria was abolished when Writ_of_election#"Dropping_the_writ", the writ dropped for the 2025 Canadian federal election, 2025 Canadian general election on 23 March 2025. 2022 Canadian Federal Electoral Redistribution
A redistribution of federal electoral districts ("ridings") began in Canada following the results of the 2021 Canadian census. The Constitution of Canada requires that federal electoral districts that compose the House of Commons undergo a redistribution of boundaries following each decennial Canadian census. The redistribution process began in October 2021; it was completed in October 2023. It is based on data obtained during the 2021 Canadian census. It is also based on the practice of giving each district only one member, which has been in effect since the 1968 election. The changes to the federal electoral district boundaries took effect for the 2025 Canadian federal election, which was the first general election called after April 22, 2024. If the election had been called before this date, that election would have used the existing electoral district boundaries, which had been in effect since the 2015 federal election was called on August 4, 2015. Jaime Battiste
Jaime Y. Battiste (born October 18, 1979) is a Canadian politician who has been a member of the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Liberal Party since 2019. A member of the Eskasoni First Nation, he is the first Mi'kmaw member of Parliament (MP) in Canada. Background Battiste is the son of Chickasaw legal scholar James (Sákéj) Youngblood Henderson and Miꞌkmaq scholar Marie Battiste, both recipients of Indspire Awards. He is a member of the Eskasoni First Nation. Battiste spent his formative years in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, graduating from Evan Hardy Collegiate in 1997. He holds a degree in Mi’kmaq studies from Cape Breton University and a Juris Doctor from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. Peter Mancini
Dominic Peter Mancini (born August 1, 1956) is a Canadian politician and lawyer. Mancini was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1997 federal election that saw a breakthrough for the New Democratic Party in the province of Nova Scotia. He served as the NDP's justice critic in the 36th Canadian Parliament. Mancini represented the riding of Sydney—Victoria until the 2000 federal election when he was defeated by Liberal Mark Eyking. He moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia following his electoral defeat. He was unsuccessful in his attempt at a comeback in the 2006 federal election in the riding of Dartmouth—Cole Harbour losing to incumbent Michael Savage by just over 4,000 votes. Cape Breton Highlands—Canso was a federal electoral district in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1997. History This riding was created in 1966 from Antigonish—Guysborough, Inverness—Richmond and North Cape Breton and Victoria ridings. Victoria County, Nova Scotia
Victoria County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Victoria and the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. History Named after Queen Victoria, it was established by statute in 1851. Cape Breton County was divided into two separate counties in that year, with the northern portion becoming Victoria County. Like other parts of Nova Scotia, the county was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. The earliest settlers of Victoria County were almost exclusively Loyalists, with most arriving from the United States in the years following the American Revolutionary War. It was noted by historian G.G. The 2006 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population. Census day was May 16, 2006. The following census was the 2011 census. Canada's total population enumerated by the 2006 census was 31,612,897. This count was lower than the official July 1, 2006 population estimate of 32,623,490 people. The previous census was the 2001 census and the following census was in 2011 census. Summary Over 12.7 million households, 32.5 million people were expected to be counted.
