Sybil Lewis was an actress in the United States. An African American, she appeared in several films including musicals during the 1940s. She appeared in African American films (race films) and Hollywood pictures. She had starring roles in several African American films including ''Lucky Gamblers'' and ''Am I Guilty?'' and portrayed smaller roles including as a maid in Hollywood films. She also had a leading role in ''Broken Strings (film) in 1940. She starred with Pigmeat Markham and John Bunn, Jr. in vaudeville shows at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Born Sybil N. Race Film
The race film or race movie was a genre of film produced in the United States between about 1915 and the early 1950s, consisting of films produced for black audiences, and featuring black casts. Approximately five hundred race films were produced. Of these, fewer than one hundred remain. Because race films were produced outside the Hollywood studio system, they were largely forgotten by mainstream film historians until they resurfaced in the 1980s on the BET cable network. In their day, race films were very popular among African-American theatergoers. Their influence continues to be felt in cinema and television marketed to African Americans. The term "race film" is sometimes used to describe films of the period aimed at other minority audiences. Lucky Gamblers
All-American News was a film production company in the U.S. bringing war propaganda newsreels and entertainment films to African American audiences. Emmanuel M. Glucksman was a film industry veteran who produced All-American News films for African American audiences. He was paired with young African American filmmaker William D. Alexander, who worked on the newsreel production team, narrated, and did interviews, and Claude Barnett, an experienced journalist who also helped produce the films.
