Susan Stranks
Susan Stranks (born 2 December 1938) is a British actress and TV presenter. Career Born in London, Stranks was ten years old when she played the role of the younger Emmeline Foster in the romantic adventure film '' The Blue Lagoon'' (1949). She then played Janet Smith, the young sister of Ann Todd, in the David Lean film '' Madeleine'' (1950). Stranks played a young student in the crime drama ''Sapphire'' (1959), and had a small part as a schoolgirl in the train scenes of '' The 39 Steps'' (also 1959) starring Kenneth More. Both roles were uncredited. She was a regular panellist on the TV pop music show ''Juke Box Jury'', and also appeared in ''Emergency Ward 10''. She is best known for the children's TV series ''Magpie'', which she co-presented from 1968 to 1974. Following ''Magpie'', Stranks devised and presented a programme for pre-school children, named ''Paperplay'', which ran until 1981. ''Magpie'' was a British children's television programme shown on ITV from 30 July 1968 to 6 June 1980. It was a magazine format show, intended to compete with the BBC's ''Blue Peter'', but it attempted to be more "hip", focusing more on popular culture. The show's creators, Lewis Rudd and Sue Turner, named the programme ''Magpie'', as a reference to the magpie's habit of collecting small items and also because of "mag" being evocative of " magazine" and "pie" being evocative of a collection of ingredients. Broadcast history The programme, made by Thames Television, was first transmitted on 30 July 1968, Thames Television's first day of broadcasting. It was shown weekly until 1969, after which, until it ended on 6 June 1980, it went out twice a week. It was not fully networked to all other ITV companies until the autumn of 1969. Ted Ray (born Charles Olden; 21 November 1905 – 8 November 1977) was an English comedian of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, on radio and television. His BBC radio show ''Ray's a Laugh'' ran for 12 years. Biography Ray was born Charles Olden in Wigan, Lancashire, England, to comic singer and mimic Charles Olden (who used the stage-name Charlie Alden) and his wife Margaret Ellen (née Kenyon). His parents moved to Liverpool within days of his birth, and Liverpudlians regard him as a local. He was educated at Anfield council school and Liverpool Collegiate School, and as a youth wished to become a footballer. As a comedian of the 1940s and 1950s, he demonstrated his ad-libbing skills in his weekly radio show ''Ray's A Laugh'' from 1949 until 1961. A music hall comedian, Ray usually played violin badly as part of his act—first as Hugh Neek, then "Nedlo the Gypsy Violinist". ''Paperplay'' is a British children's television programme, produced by Thames Television for the ITV network between 1974 and 1981. The show was devised and presented by Susan Stranks, a former ''Magpie'' presenter. In each show, Stranks would make simple creations from paper and other household waste. Assisting her would be two mischievous hand puppet spiders named Itsy and Bitsy. Itsy was the red male, growling spider and Bitsy the yellow female, squeaking spider. ''Juke Box Jury'' was a music panel show which ran on BBC Television between 1 June 1959 and 27 December 1967. The programme was based on the American show '' Jukebox Jury'', itself an offshoot of a long-running radio series.
