Susan Ehrlich
Susan Lynn Ehrlich is a Canadian linguist known for her work in both language and gender, language and the law, and the intersections between them. She studies language, gender and the law, with a focus on consent and coercion in rape trials. Education and professional career Ehrlich received an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English from York University, and both a master's degree and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Toronto. Her PhD was awarded in 1986, for a dissertation entitled: A Linguistic Analysis of Point of View in Fiction. Between 1983 and 1986 she held lecturer positions at the University of Toronto, Brock University, and York University. In 1986, she joined York University's Department of Languages Literatures and Linguistics as a sessional faculty member. Between 1988 and 1990 she held this same position on a full-time basis as an assistant professor. Discourse Analysis
Discourse analysis (DA), or discourse studies, is an approach to the analysis of written, vocal, or sign language use, or any significant semiotic event. The objects of discourse Analysis ( discourse, writing, conversation, communicative event) are variously defined in terms of coherent sequences of sentences, propositions, speech acts, speech, or Conversation Analysis#Turn-taking organization, turns-at-talk. Contrary to much of traditional linguistics, discourse analysts not only study language use 'beyond the sentence boundary' but also prefer to analyze 'naturally occurring' language use, not invented examples. Text linguistics is a closely related field. Janet Holmes (linguist)
Janet Holmes (born 17 May 1947) is a New Zealand sociolinguist. Her research interests include language and gender, language in the workplace, and New Zealand English. Academic career After obtaining an MPhil at the University of Leeds, Holmes moved to Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, later becoming a naturalised New Zealander in 1975. She published a textbook ''Introduction to Sociolinguistics'' in 1992 which has run to five editions. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and won the Dame Joan Metge Medal in 2012. She is now an Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Holmes has published widely on an array of topics. Miriam Meyerhoff
Miriam Meyerhoff (born 1964) is a New Zealand sociolinguist. In 2020 she was appointed as a senior research fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Early life and family Meyerhoff was born in 1964, the daughter of poet Mary Cresswell and philosopher . Her father died in a car accident the following year, and her mother married logician Max Cresswell in 1970. The family subsequently moved to New Zealand. Academic career Meyerhoff completed a Master of Arts degree at Victoria University of Wellington, and, in 1997, a PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. Her PhD supervisor was Gillian Sankoff. Meyerhoff has held faculty positions at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Auckland, and Victoria University of Wellington. Egale Canada (formerly Equality for Gays And Lesbians Everywhere) is an advocacy organization founded in 1986 by Les McAfee to advance equality for Canadian lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ( LGBT) people and their families, across Canada.
