Surbiton Lagoon
Surbiton Lagoon was an open air swimming pool located in Surbiton, London, England. It opened in May 1934 though had been open for business since April, and was situated in Raeburn Avenue in what was then the Municipal Borough of Surbiton, Surbiton Urban District of Surrey. It was situated on the 418 bus route of London Transport (London Country Buses from 1 January 1970), and near to Berrylands railway station, Berrylands and Tolworth railway stations. The lagoon complex was designed by the architect HT Mather. The pool had a maximum depth of and a minimum depth of . It was x - a huge pool by any standards. The lagoon was closed permanently in 1980. Opening day The opening ceremony was performed on a Wednesday evening in May 1934 by Mr. H.S. Durbin Magistrate, JP and featured many displays of swimming, including an appearance by Ivy Hawke, Miss Ivy Hawke, the successful 1928 Channel swimmer, who lived locally. Surbiton is a suburban neighbourhood in South West London, within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames (RBK). It is next to the River Thames, southwest of Charing Cross. Surbiton was in the Historic counties of England, historic county of Surrey and since 1965 it has been in Greater London. Surbiton comprises five of the RBK's wards: Alexandra, Berrylands, St. Mark's, Surbiton Hill, and Tolworth. Founded originally as Kingston-upon-Railway when the area was first developed in the 1840s, Surbiton possesses a mixture of grand 19th-century townhouses, Art Deco Quadrangle (architecture), courts, and more recent residential blocks blending in with semi-detached 20th-century housing estates.
