Stratford Point Light
Stratford Point Light is a historic lighthouse in the Lordship neighborhood of Stratford, Connecticut, United States, at the mouth of the Housatonic River. The second tower was one of the first prefabricated cylindrical lighthouses in the country and remains active. It sits on a tract at the southeastern tip of Stratford Point. History The first Stratford Point Lighthouse was built in 1822. In 1855 a fifth order lens was added to the wooden tower. In 1881, the tower and dwelling were razed and replaced with a tall, brick lined cast-iron tower and equipped with a third order Fresnel lens. The light was automated in 1970 with a modern beacon. It is an active aid to navigation and is used for Coast Guard housing. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Stratford is a New England town, town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. It is situated on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Housatonic River. The town is part of the Greater Bridgeport Planning Region, Connecticut, Greater Bridgeport Planning Region, and the Greater Bridgeport, Bridgeport–Stamford–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. List Of Lighthouses In Connecticut
The U.S. state of Connecticut has fourteen active lighthouses in the state, two of which are maintained as private aids; six are standing but inactive. Another was destroyed after its deactivation. The earliest lighthouse in the state was erected in 1760, but that tower, the first New London Harbor Light, was replaced in 1801, and its successor is the oldest surviving light in Connecticut, as well as the tallest. The last officially recognized lighthouse in the state, the Avery Point Light, was constructed in 1943, but was not lit until the following year. The Mystic Seaport Light, constructed in 1966, is a functioning replica housed with a historic Fresnel lens; it is classified as an unofficial and non-navigational aid.
