Strategy Challenges Collection
''Strategy Challenges Collection'' is a two-game series of educational video games created by Edmark. The first game, initially released as ''Strategy Games of the World'' and later re-released as ''Strategy Challenges Collection 1'', was released in 1995. A sequel was released in 1997 entitled ''Strategy Challenges Collection 2: In the Wild''. Gameplay The games each feature three strategy games that the user can play against the computer or another user. In the first game, they are Nine men's morris, Gomoku, and Mancala. In ''2'', these games are Tablut, Jungle (called "Jungle Chess" in the program) and Surakarta. Each game has three levels and provides the user with the ability to decide whether a computer opponent will play offensively or defensively. There are six computer opponent characters (two for each of the three levels) and each always plays either offensively or defensively, but each of them appear on a different level in each game. Edmark Corporation (or simply Edmark) was a publisher of educational print materials and educational software developer based in Redmond, Washington. They developed software for Microsoft Windows and MacOS in several languages and sold it in over a dozen countries. History Edmark was founded in 1970 by Gordon B. Bleil by combining the assets of Educational Aids and Services Co. a small supplier of educational materials and programs and L-Tec Systems Inc. which had developed programs from its research. Surakarta (game)
Surakarta is an Indonesian abstract strategy board game for two players, named after Surakarta, Central Java. The game features an unusual method of capture which is "possibly unique" and "not known to exist in any other recorded board game". Little is known about its history. The name of the game in Indonesian is permainan, which simply translates as "the game". In Java, the game is also called ''dam-daman''. It was first published in France in 1970 as "Surakarta". The game is called "Roundabouts" in Sid Sackson's ''The Book of Classic Board Games''.
