Strandgade 30
Strandgade 30 is one of the oldest townhouses situated on Strandgade in the Christianshavn district of central Copenhagen, Denmark. The three-winged building from 1635 is via an adjoining lower building from the 20th century and a three-storey warehouse connected to a two-storey building at ''Wildersgade 43'' on the other side of the block. The property was from 1680 until at least the 1860s owned by brewers whose brewery was located in the yard. The painter Wilhelm Hammershøi resided in the apartment on the first floor from 1899 to 1909. Some 60 of the 142 paintings from this period of his life, including some of his most iconic works, are interior paintings from the apartment. Other notable former residents include the ship-owner, merchant and slave trader Hens Lind (businessman), Jens Lind. Ordrupgaard is a state-owned art museum situated near Jægersborg Dyrehave, north of Copenhagen, Denmark. The museum houses one of Northern Europe's most considerable collections of Danish and French art from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. History Ordrupgaard was originally a county home built between 1916 and 1918 by Wilhelm Hansen and his wife Henny Nathalie Soelberg Jensen (1870-1951). ''Interior with Young Woman Seen from the Back'' () is an oil-on-canvas painting from by the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi. It is now held in the Randers Museum of Art. It uses the muted grey-blue palette, uncluttered composition and detailed attention to the play of light typical of Hammershøi's work. Description The young woman featured is Hammershøi's wife, Ida, whom he painted frequently with her back turned. Michael Palin, an admirer of Hammershøi's work, believes that Ida is often depicted facing away since, in the portraits in which she is facing the viewer, her face reveals "a troubled soul"; and that maybe Hammershøi painted her in structured, minimalist interiors as a response to an emotionally fraught domestic life. Mansard Roof
A mansard or mansard roof (also called a French roof or curb roof) is a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof characterised by two slopes on each of its sides, with the lower slope, punctured by dormer windows, at a steeper angle than the upper. The steep roof with windows creates an additional floor of habitable space (a garret), and reduces the overall height of the roof for a given number of habitable storeys. Wildersgade is a street in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs along the length of the neighbourhood, parallel to Christianshavn Canal, one block to the east, from the Christiansbro development in the south(west) to Wilder's Canal in the north(east). Keystone (architecture)
A keystone (or capstone) is the wedge-shaped stone at the apex of a masonry arch or typically round-shaped one at the apex of a vault. In both cases it is the final piece placed during construction and locks all the stones into position, allowing the arch or vault to bear weight. In arches and vaults (such as quasi-domes) keystones are often enlarged beyond the structural requirements and decorated. A variant in domes and crowning vaults is a lantern. Keystones, as a hallmark of strength or good architecture, or their suggested form are sometimes placed in the centre of the flat top of doors, recesses and windows for decorative effect, so as to form an upward projection of a lintel. Although a masonry arch or vault cannot be self-supporting until the keystone is placed, the keystone experiences the least stress of any of the voussoirs, due to its position at the apex.
