Stefan Dohr
Stefan Dohr (born 3 September 1965) is a German horn player and principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic. Biography Born in Münster, Dohr obtained the Solo Horn position of the Frankfurt Opera House at the age of 19. He held the same position with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. In 1993, Dohr was chosen to play principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic. In March 2008 he played the world premiere of a horn concerto specially composed for him by Austrian composer Herbert Willi. In 2024, he premiered Jörg Widmann's Horn Concerto. Horn Concerto (Widmann)
Jörg Widmann's Horn Concerto was composed in 2023–24 and premiered on 30 May 2024 with soloist Stefan Dohr and the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Simon Rattle at Berliner Philharmonie. The work has enigmatic as well as humorous elements. History In the 2023–24 season, Widmann was Berlin Philharmonic's Composer in Residence and made his debut conducting the orchestra. Widmann composed a concerto during the residency for the orchestras principle horn and dedicatee Stefan Dohr. The composer and the soloist had met with sketch material about ten times. With the premiere of this work Widmann's residency with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra came to an end. The horn concerto has been commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic and Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Herbert Willi
Herbert Willi (born 7 January 1956) is an Austrian composer of classical music, whose orchestral works, concertos and chamber music have been performed internationally and also recorded. Willi composed an opera, ''Schlafes Bruder'', for the Opernhaus Zürich. Life Willi was born in Bludenz, Vorarlberg. He studied music pedagogy and theology at the University of Innsbruck, and simultaneously bassoon and piano at the Innsbruck conservatory. From 1983, he studied composition with Helmut Eder at the Salzburg Mozarteum, then with Boguslaw Schaeffer. He lives in Sankt Anton im Montafon. Work Willi's work comprises an opera, orchestral works, and chamber music, including compositions for one player. Willi received a commission from the Salzburg Festival and the Cleveland Orchestra in 1991 for ''Konzert für Orchester''. The premiere was conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi.
