State Arsenal (Providence, Rhode Island)
The State Arsenal, originally the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery Arsenal and commonly called the Benefit Street Arsenal, is a historic armory building located at 176 Benefit Street in the College Hill neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. It was built in 1843 to a Gothic Revival design by Providence architect James C. Bucklin. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. History The Benefit Street Arsenal was completed in March 1843 as the armory of the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery (PMCA), founded in 1801. The organization had not previously owned its own building; construction was in part prompted by the Dorr Rebellion, during which, in May 1842, the Dorrites had unsuccessfully assaulted the former state arsenal at the Dexter Training Ground. The Rhode Island State Guard is the currently inactive state defense force of Rhode Island. As a state defense force, the Rhode Island State Guard served as a state military unit which assumed the stateside duties of the Rhode Island National Guard when the National Guard was in federal service. Egyptian Revival is an architectural style that uses the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt. It is attributed generally to the public awareness of ancient Egyptian monuments generated by Napoleon's French campaign in Egypt and Syria, invasion of Egypt in 1798, and Admiral Nelson's defeat of the French Navy at the Battle of the Nile later that year. Russell Warren (architect)
Russell Warren (1783–1860) was an American architect, best known for his work in the Greek Revival style. He practiced in Bristol and Providence. Life and career Warren was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island. He arrived in Bristol in 1800, and began to design and build unique Federal-style houses for the upper and middle class residents of that town. In 1823, Warren left Providence and went south to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he became a building contractor. In 1826 Warren moved back to Rhode Island, opening an architect's office in Providence. In 1828, he collaborated with fellow Providence architect James C. Bucklin of Tallman & Bucklin in the design of the Westminster Arcade, designing the Westminster Street facade. He joined Tallman & Bucklin formally in 1830, the firm becoming Warren, Tallman & Bucklin. The 103rd Field Artillery Regiment (103rd FAR) is a regiment of the United States Army.
