Standing Peachtree
Standing Peachtree was a Muscogee village and the closest Indian settlement to what is now the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia. It was located where Peachtree Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River, in today's Paces neighborhood. It was located in the borderlands of the Cherokee and Muscogee nations. It is referred to in several documents dating as far back as 1762. Etymology Standing Peachtree's name is an accurate preservation of its native Muscogee Indian name, ''Pakanahuili''. Some sources claim that "peachtree" is a corruption of "pitch tree", a supposed reference to pine trees from which pitch could be obtained. However, there is no evidence for the "pitch tree" name from before the 20th century, while "Standing Peachtree" can be traced back to the 18th century. The Muscogee, also known as the Mvskoke, Muscogee Creek, and the Muscogee Creek Confederacy ( in the Muscogee language), are a group of related indigenous peoples of the Southeastern Woodlands, indigenous (Native American) peoples of the Southeastern WoodlandsTranscribed documents Sequoyah Research Center and the American Native Press Archives in the United States, United States of America. Fort Daniel
Fort Daniel was a fort in Georgia, United States. Located on Hog Mountain in modern-day Gwinnett County, the fort was built in 1813, during the War of 1812, to protect settlers in the state's western regions from attacks. The site of the fort underwent archaeological excavation in 2007. History In 1798, Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins established a boundary line in north Georgia that marked the border for Cherokee hunting grounds. Multiple forts were erected along this "Hawkins Line" in order to protect white settlers of the region. One such fort existed at Hog Mountain, near the headwaters of the Apalachee River and at the southern point of this line. While little is known about this early station, by 1813, General Allen Daniel Jr. of the Georgia Militia ordered the fort at Hog Mountain to be rebuilt. History Of Atlanta
The history of Atlanta dates back to 1836, when Georgia decided to build a railroad to the U.S. Midwest and a location was chosen to be the line's terminus. The stake marking the founding of "Terminus" was driven into the ground in 1837 (called the Zero Mile Post). In 1839, homes and a store were built there and the settlement grew. Between 1845 and 1854, rail lines arrived from four different directions, and the rapidly growing town quickly became the rail hub for the entire Southern United States. During the American Civil War, Atlanta, as a distribution hub, became the target of a major Union campaign, and in 1864, Union William Sherman's troops set on fire and destroyed the city's assets and buildings, save churches and hospitals. Historic Ferries Of The Atlanta Area
Historic ferries operated on rivers around Atlanta, Georgia area, and became namesakes for numerous current-day roads in north Georgia. Most of the ferries date to the early years of European-American settlement in the 1820s and 1830s, when Cherokee and other Native Americans still occupied part of what became Georgia. An assortment of privately owned and operated ferries carried travelers and loads across the Chattahoochee River and several other smaller rivers. Ferry operators often set up small trading posts at their ferry landings. They provided much needed service when there were no bridges, and many rivers ran too high to be forded. Peachtree Street is one of several major streets running through the city of Atlanta. Beginning at Five Points in downtown Atlanta, it runs North through Midtown; a few blocks after entering into Buckhead, the name changes to Peachtree Road at Deering Road.
