Spillers Records
Spillers Records, established in 1894, is recognised as the worlds oldest record shop. History Spillers was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller at its original location in Queens Arcade, where the shop specialised in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs and also sold and repaired musical instruments. In the early 1920s, Spiller's son Edward took over the running of the business and, with the aid of the popular accordionist and bandleader Joe Gregory, sold musical instruments alongside the pre-recorded music. In the late 1940s the shop moved around the corner to a larger premises on The Hayes. In 2006, the shop's future was made uncertain when the site rent was increased by Spillers' landlords, Helical Bar, who stated that they were keen for the shop to survive. Spillers Ltd was a British company that owned flour milling operations, operated bakeries and also sold pet food and equine feeds. History The business originated in 1829 from the establishment of a flour mill in Bridgwater, Somerset, by Joel Spiller. The business rapidly expanded to other parts of England and Wales. In 1855 Spillers began to manufacture ships' biscuits. By 1854, Spiller opened a flour mill in Cardiff with his business partner Samuel Browne. The mill burned down in 1882 and was rebuilt in 1887 incorporating two other mills. In 1893 a mill was built in Cardiff that formed part of a complex of steam-powered roller mills with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. In 1889 the business merged with William Baker and Sons of Bristol to form Spillers and Bakers Ltd. At the beginning of the 20th century Spillers introduced the Turog brand of brown bread. Morgan Arcade
The Morgan Arcade is a shopping arcade (architecture), arcade in Cardiff, South Wales. Started in 1896, it was built to connect the main entrance of David Morgan (department store), David Morgan's department store on St. Mary's Street, Cardiff, St Mary's Street, with his other store on The Hayes. It opened in 1899 as the New Central Arcade, running east–west from Hayes to St. Mary's Street. After Morgans bought the Royal Arcade, Cardiff, Royal Arcade, the family formed a holding company called the Cardiff Arcade Company, which owned and operated both the Royal and renamed Morgan arcades, which both ran underneath the store. After the agreed closure of David Morgan's, the property assets inside the various holdings companies were sold in late 2004 for £25 million to property firm Helical Bar.
