South Athens
South Athens () is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Attica. The regional unit covers the south-central part of the Athens agglomeration. Administration As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit South Athens was created out of part of the former Athens Prefecture. It is subdivided into 8 municipalities. Palaio Faliro
Palaio Faliro (, ; Katharevousa: Palaion Faliron, Παλαιόν Φάληρον, meaning "Old Phalerum") is a town on the Saronic Gulf coast and a municipality in the southern part of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. At the 2021 census it had 64,863 inhabitants. Geography Palaio Faliro is situated on the east coast of the Phalerum Bay, a bay of the Saronic Gulf, 6 km southwest of Athens city centre. The municipality has an area of 4.574 km2. It is surrounded by other districts of Athens: Kallithea, Nea Smyrni, Agios Dimitrios and Alimos. The Pikrodafni stream flows into sea on the border of Palaio Faliro and Alimos. Palaio Faliro is at the Northwest part of what is referred to as the Athens Riviera. Nea Smyrni
Nea Smyrni (, ''Néa Smýrni'', "New Smyrna") is a municipality and a town in South Athens, Greece. At the 2021 Greek census, 2021 census, it had 72,853 inhabitants. It was named after the former Greek city Smyrna (today's İzmir in Turkey), whence many refugees arrived and settled in the Nea Smyrni area following the 1922 catastrophe of Asia Minor and the Great fire of Smyrna, Burning of Smyrna which left big parts of the city's Christian population massacred by Turkish mobs and military, during the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), Greco-Turkish war. Glyfada
Glyfada (, ) is a town and a suburb in the South Athens regional unit located in the Athens Riviera along the coast of Saronic Gulf. It is situated in the southern parts of the Athens#Athens Urban Area, Athens urban area. The area stretches from the foot of the Hymettus mountain to the Saronic Gulf. History In ancient times, the area was a deme known as Aixone (). Today, Glyfada is packed with some of the capital's best-known nightclubs, upscale restaurants and shops. It could be argued to be one of the most "Americanization, Americanized" of Athenian municipalities, since an American airbase was located nearby until the early 1990s. The base's population contributed in part to Glyfada's character, leading to a unique blend of Greek and American atmosphere and cuisine. Alimos
Alimos () is a town on the Saronic Gulf coast, a suburb of the Athens agglomeration, and a municipality in South Athens regional unit, Greece. It was formed in 1968 comprising two settlements, the suburban seaside town of Kalamaki (), and the inland community of Trachones (). Alimos had 43,174 inhabitants in the 2021 census.
