Sonora, California
Sonora is the only incorporated city in Tuolumne County, California, United States, of which it is also the county seat. Founded during the California Gold Rush by Mexican miners from Sonora (after which the city is named), the city population was 5,003 during the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, an increase from the 4,610 counted during the 2010 United States census, 2010 census. State Route 108 (SR 108) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that runs from the Central Valley and across the Sierra Nevada via the Sonora Pass. It generally runs northeast from downtown Modesto near the SR 99/ SR 132 interchange, to U.S. Route 395 near the Nevada state line. The route was once recommended to continue south of Modesto to Interstate 5, although today that portion exists as a county road. David Carkeet (born November 15, 1946, Sonora, California) is an American novelist and essayist. Three of his novels have been named ''The New York Times Book Review'' Notable Books of the Year. Biography Carkeet grew up in the small northern California town where he was born and attended the University of California at Davis and Berkeley, graduating from the Davis campus with a B.A. degree in German in 1968. He received an M.A. in English literature from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1970 and a Ph.D. in English linguistics from Indiana University Bloomington in 1973. From 1973 to 2002 he taught writing and linguistics at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Sonora Hebrew Cemetery
The Sonora Hebrew Cemetery, also known as Pioneer Jewish Cemetery, is an inactive Jewish cemetery founded in c. 1851, and located in Sonora, California, Sonora, California. This was the first Jewish cemetery in the Gold Country, Gold Rush region. History The cemetery was founded by the Friendly society, Hebrew Benevolent Society and is mostly the graves of European-born Jews who emigrated to the Gold Country. The first burial is recorded in 1853 as Hartwig Caro, age 17; however it's possible there were burials starting in 1851. Local Jewish community leader Mayer Baer (1821–1907), and then his son Julius Baer (1876–1972) maintained the cemetery up until 1972. As of 2022, there are only 44 visible grave sites. In 1962, the Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemeteries and Landmarks in the West was formed to help with education, and restoration for all of the Jewish cemeteries in Gold County.
