Smile Train
Smile Train is a nonprofit organization and charity providing corrective surgery for children with cleft lips and palates. Headquartered in New York City and founded in 1999, Smile Train provides free corrective cleft surgery in 87 countries, training local doctors and providing hospital funding for the procedures. History Smile Train was created in 1998 by Brian Mullaney and Charles Wang, who had previously worked with Operation Smile, another charity focused on correcting cleft lips and palates. They felt the most efficient way to provide cleft surgery was to train and support local doctors rather than to fly in Western doctors to provide surgeries in poor, developing countries. GiveWell is an American non-profit charity assessment and effective altruism-focused organization. GiveWell focuses primarily on the cost-effectiveness of the organizations that it evaluates, rather than traditional metrics such as the percentage of the organization's budget that is spent on overhead. Kids Operating Room aka KidsOR is a Scottish charity founded in 2018 who install paediatric Operating Rooms in local hospitals in low- and middle-income countries. Based in Scotland, KidsOR have shipped and installed theatres to over 20 countries across Africa and Latin America. They had noticed that although Malaria, HIV and TB receive support, it was lack of surgery that killed more children than all of these combined.
