''Slot Machine'' is a 1979 video game written by David Crane (programmer), David Crane for the Atari VCS (renamed to the Atari 2600 in 1982) and published by Atari, Inc. Along with ''Star Ship'' and ''Miniature Golf (Atari 2600), Miniature Golf'', it was one of the first Atari VCS games to be discontinued. Gameplay The game has one-player and two-player modes. Gameplay options include ''Jackpot'' and ''Payoff'' modes. The game continues until the player runs out of tokens. Development The game was written by David Crane (programmer), David Crane, who went on to develop ''Pitfall!''. Crane developed the game for his mother, who was a lover of slot-machine games. Programming the game to represent the different symbols of a traditional fruit-machine proved difficult given that the Atari 2600 could only render 8 monochrome pixels for each sprite, so Crane made use of differing shapes that were easily distinguishable, such as cacti. David Crane (programmer)
David Patrick Crane (born 1953 in Nappanee, Indiana, United States) is an American video game designer and programmer. Crane originally worked in the field of hardware design for National Semiconductor. He went to college at DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology degree in 1975. Crane started his programming career at Atari, making games for the Atari 2600. He also worked on the operating system for the Atari 800 computer. After meeting co-worker Alan Miller in a tennis game, Miller told Crane about a plan he had to leave Atari and found a company that would give game designers more recognition. From this meeting, Crane left Atari in 1979 and co-founded Activision, along with Miller, Jim Levy, Bob Whitehead, and Larry Kaplan. His games won many awards while he was at Activision. ''Pitfall!'' is a platform video game designed by David Crane for the Atari 2600 and released by Activision in 1982. The player controls Pitfall Harry and is tasked with collecting all the treasures in a jungle within 20 minutes. The world consists of 255 screens which are horizontally connected in a flip screen manner. Each screen has one or more hazards: quicksand, tarpits, rolling logs, crocodiles, snakes, scorpions, campfires, and swinging vines. ''Pitfall!'' received positive reviews upon release and is now considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Sears licensed the console and many games from Atari, Inc., selling them under different names. A few cartridges were Sears exclusives. ''Miniature Golf'' is a golf video game developed for the Atari VCS (later called the Atari 2600) by Tom Reuterdahl and published by Atari, Inc. in 1979. Gameplay There are nine playable holes in Miniature Golf. The goal of each hole is to get the ball into the cup. Each time the player hits the ball, a stroke is added to their score. The number of strokes the player may take are unlimited. A par represents the number to strokes the player ideally must take to complete the hole. Release ''Miniature Golf'' was released in 1979 and published by Atari, Inc. For the Sears Tele-Games release of the game published by Sears, the game was re-titled ''Arcade Golf''.
