Skelton, Cumbria
Skelton is a small village and civil parish about north west of Penrith in the English county of Cumbria. It is on the former route of the B5305 road, which is now about to the north. The parish had a population of 1,059 in 2001, increasing slightly to 1,153 at the 2011 Census. The village has a primary school, pub, and Anglican and Methodist churches. Close to the village is the Skelton transmitting station and the stately home of Hutton-in-the-Forest, the family home of Lord Inglewood. Skelton Agricultural Show is one of the largest in Cumbria and takes place on the first Saturday in July at Hutton-in-the-Forest. The large parish of Skelton includes the villages and hamlets of Ellonby, Ivegill, Lamonby, Unthank, Unthank End, Skelton Wood End, Laithes, Hutton End, Hutton Row, New Rent, Braithwaite and Middlesceugh. Margaret Mary Plues (ca. 1840 – 1903) was a British botanist and writer known primarily for her popularizing botanical books, especially those on the ferns and grasses of Great Britain. She also wrote under the pseudonym Skelton Yorke. She spent the latter part of her life working with Catholic establishments providing relief to the poor. Biography Margaret Mary Plues was born in Ripon, Yorkshire, to the Rev. William Plues and Hannah (Swire) Plues. She had at least seven siblings, and she lived much of her adult life with one or another of them. In her early twenties, she published books for the general public on her botanical collecting trips, with titles beginning ''Rambles in Search of...''. Skelton Barnaby Knaggs (27 June 1911 – 30 April 1955) was an English stage actor who also appeared in films, especially in horror films. Biography Knaggs was born in the Hillsborough district of Sheffield, England. Knaggs moved to London where he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and subsequently became a Shakespearean actor. In addition to appearing on stage in Shakespeare's ''Cymbeline'', Knaggs appeared in a few British films, including an uncredited role as a German orderly in Michael Powell's '' The Spy in Black''. At some point he moved to Los Angeles, California, and found work as a character actor in Hollywood. Skelton Inlet
Skelton Glacier () is a large glacier flowing from the polar plateau into the Ross Ice Shelf at Skelton Inlet on the Hillary Coast, south of Victoria Land, Antarctica. Naming and exploration Skelton Glacier was named after the Skelton Inlet by the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE), 1956–58. The glacier was chosen in 1957 as the New Zealand party's route from the Ross Ice Shelf to the Antarctic Plateau. The Arctic Institute of North America organized two ground traverses in the antarctic summer of 1959–60 sponsored by the United States Antarctic Research Program. The first left New Zealand's Scott Base on 16 October 1959, crossed part of the Ross Ice Shelf, and on 27 October 1959 reached the foot of the Skelton Glacier. The Skelton Transmitting Station is a radio transmitter site at near Skelton, Cumbria, England, about north-west of Penrith, Cumbria, Penrith, run by Babcock International and owned by the Ministry of Defence (United Kingdom), Ministry of Defence. Shortwave broadcasts from this station ended on 30 March 2023, replaced by Woofferton transmitting station, Woofferton.
