Sir David Brand Award
The Sir David Brand Award for Tourism is the highest award for tourism in Western Australia, named after Sir David Brand (1912-1979), who was Premier of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971. It was established in 1972 as a single award, and is now the highest honour in the Western Australia Tourism Awards. The awards were established in 1972, by John Wood, founder of the Fleetwood caravan company. He said later: Speaking in parliament in 2013 John Day commented that David Brand's widow Lady Brand, then aged 92, had at that time attended all but one of the 41 presentation ceremonies for the award. David Brand
Sir David Brand Order of St Michael and St George, KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician. He was the longest-serving premier of Western Australia, in office from 1959 to 1971, and was state leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Party from 1957 to 1972. Brand was born in Dongara, Western Australia. He was raised on farms in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West and left school at the age of 14. He moved to the Eastern Goldfields in 1935 and worked as a miner for several years, later serving in the Australian Army during World War II where he was wounded on the Greek campaign. Brand was elected to the Parliament of Western Australia at a 1945 by-election for the seat of Electoral district of Greenough, Greenough. He served as a cabinet minister under Ross McLarty from 1949 to 1953 and replaced McLarty as leader of the Liberal Party in 1957. The premier of Western Australia is the head of government of the state of Western Australia. The role of premier at a state level is similar to the role of the prime minister of Australia at a federal level. The premier leads the executive branch of the Government of Western Australia and is accountable to the Parliament of Western Australia. The premier is appointed by the governor of Western Australia. By convention, the governor appoints as premier whoever has the support of the majority of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament of Western Australia. John Day (Australian Politician)
John Howard Dadley Day (born 24 December 1955) is a West Australian state politician. He was a Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 2017. Personal life Day was born on 24 December 1955 in Middle Swan, Western Australia to John and Myfanwy Day. His father, who survived the Second Battle of El Alamein, died when Day was 17 years old. Attending Guildford Grammar School, Day later completed a Bachelor of Science, and a BDSc, Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Western Australia going on to work at the Perth Dental Hospital as well as other clinical situations including Hakea Prison, Canning Vale Prison. Busselton Jetty
Busselton Jetty is a jetty located in Busselton, Western Australia. It is the longest timber-piled jetty (pier) in the Southern Hemisphere at long. The jetty is managed by a not-for-profit community organisation, Busselton Jetty Inc. The jetty's construction commenced in 1864 and the first section was opened in 1865. The jetty was extended numerous times until the 1960s, ultimately reaching a length of . The last commercial vessel called at the jetty in 1971 and the jetty was closed the following year. It passed into the control of Busselton Shire and has been gradually restored and improved since. The jetty has survived Cyclone Alby in 1978, Teredo (bivalve), borers, weathering, several fires, and the threat of demolition, to have become a major regional tourist attraction. Sandalford Wines
__NOTOC__ Sandalford Wines is a privately owned Australian winery business based at Caversham, in the Swan Valley, the focal point of the Swan District wine region of Western Australia. Sandalford owns and operates wineries and vineyards both in Caversham and at Wilyabrup, in Western Australia's Margaret River wine region. The company traces its origins back to 1840, when John Septimus Roe, the first Surveyor-General of the Swan River Colony, was granted on the banks of the Swan River by Queen Victoria, in recognition of his services to the colony. In the same year, Captain Roe planted Western Australia's first vines at the property, which he named Sandalford after an estate owned by his family on the site of a priory built in 1066. Kings Park And Botanic Garden
Kings Park is a park overlooking Perth Water and the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. The park is a mixture of grassed parkland, botanical gardens and natural bushland on Mount Eliza with two-thirds of the grounds conserved as native bushland. Offering panoramic views of the Swan River and Darling Range, it is home to over 324 native plant varieties, 215 known indigenous fungi species and 80 bird species. Aviair, previously known as Slingair Heliwork, is an airline and air charter company based in Kununurra, Western Australia. It operates air charter services and regular passenger services. Esplanade Hotel, Albany
The Esplanade Hotel was a hotel that once stood overlooking Middleton Beach in Albany, Western Australia. The hotel was demolished in January 2007 by Singaporean owners, WCP Plaza, to make way for an 81-room hotel, function centre, village square, shops and health and recreation facilities. The proposal for the new hotel was approved in 2007 by the City of Albany. The council also supported the rezoning of several locations in Earl Street and Barry Court to allow the development of the hotel. The site remains vacant in 2015. The original hotel was built on the site in 1898, with several different hotels being built in the same space over the years. In 1908 the hotel, insured for £2000, burned to the ground. An inquest into the cause of the fire was held, but no evidence could be found on how the fire originated.
