The Old Man of the South Pole (Chinese language, Chinese & ), also called the Old Xian (Daoism), Immortal of the South Pole (), Xian of Longevity (), or Star of Longevity (), is the Taoism, Taoist :wikt:deify, deification of Canopus, the brightest star of the constellation Carina (constellation), Carina. He is typically portrayed with long white hair and beard, a protruding forehead and a healthy pink complexion. His right hand often holds a Peaches of Immortality, peach and left hand a walking staff with a calabash gourd, which is said to contain the Pill of Immortality, elixir of life. He can also be portrayed as riding a Cranes in Chinese mythology, crane or a deer, often accompanied by disciples. He is one of the symbols of happiness and longevity in Far Eastern culture. ''Shòu'' () is the Chinese word/character for "longevity". Use Three of the most important goals in life in Chinese traditional thought are the propitious blessings of happiness (''fú'' ), professional success or prosperity (''lù'' ), and longevity (''shòu'' ). These are visually represented by the three "star gods" of the same names ( ''Fú, Lù, Shòu''), commonly depicted as three male figurines (each wearing a distinctive garment and holding an object that enables them to be differentiated), or the Chinese ideographs/characters themselves, or various homophones or objects with relevant attributes.
