Shin Hyun-joon (general)
Shin Hyun-joon (; Hanja: 申鉉俊; October 23, 1915 – October 14, 2007) was a Republic of Korea Marine Corps lieutenant general and the first Commandant of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps. He is South Korea's longest-serving general officer, as well as the nation's longest-serving ambassador. Shin is known as "The Father of the Marine Corps." Career Shin was born in Japanese-occupied Korea but grew up in Manchuria and served with the Manchukuo Imperial Army during the 1930s. He joined the South Korean coast guard, the predecessor of the Republic of Korea Navy, as a lieutenant in 1946, during the U.S. military transitional period. Republic Of Korea Marine Corps
The Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC; ), also known as the ROK Marine Corps, ROK Marines or South Korean marines, is the naval infantry of South Korea. The ROKMC is a branch of the Republic of Korea Navy responsible for amphibious operations, and also functions as a rapid reaction force and a strategic reserve. The ROKMC was founded as a suppression operations force against communist partisans in 1949, prior to the Korean War. The ROKMC also fought in combat during the Vietnam War. The ROK Marine Corps, with 29,000 personnel, is organized into two divisions and two separate brigades under the Headquarters ROK Marine Corps. The ROK Marine Corps has about 300 tracked vehicles including assault amphibious vehicles, main battle tanks, and self-propelled artillery. History A group of local businessmen met on January 9, 1946, to organize a weekly newspaper for Okaloosa County's southern region. The Daejeon National Cemetery () is located in Hyeonchungwon-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, South Korea.
