Shell Lake (Canada 2016 Census, 2016 population: ) is a village in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Spiritwood No. 496 and Division No. 16, Saskatchewan, Census Division No. 16. This village is 90 kilometres west of the City of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Prince Albert. It was formerly part of the Rural Municipality of Shell Lake No. 495, Rural Municipality (RM) of Shell Lake No. 495 before it was absorbed by the RM of Spiritwood No. 496. It is the administrative centre of the Ahtahkakoop Indian Reserve No. 104, Ahtahkakoop Cree First Nations in Canada, First Nation band government. The Shell Lake murders is the name of a mass murder incident committed by Victor Ernest Hoffman (1946 – May 21, 2004) in Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during the early morning of August 15, 1967. Nine people, all members of the Peterson family, were shot in the head by a man who was later called "Canada's worst random mass murderer."“Canada's 'worst random mass murderer' dies,” ''Regina Leader-Post'', May 22, 2004. Events Victor Hoffman was 21 years old at the time of the murders and had been released from a mental hospital just three weeks prior. Big Shell Lake
Big Shell Lake is a lake in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Officially known as Shell Lake, it is commonly called ''Big'' Shell Lake to differentiate it from Little Shell Lake, which is about downstream. Big Shell Lake is in the RM of Spiritwood No. 496 and the resort villages of Big Shell and Echo Bay are on the south-eastern and eastern shore. Access to the lake and the villages is from Highway 12. Big Shell Lake is the source of Shell River (formally ''Shell Brook''). The lake's main inflow begins in the Thickwood Hills and flows east into the south-western corner of the lake. Shell Lake is a lake in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It is a small lake east of Chitek Lake in the Beaver River drainage basin. The primary inflow comes from Lac Huard, which is to the south. From the northern end of the lake, Tea Creek flows out and to the north. Tea Creek is joined by several smaller creeks en route to the northern end of Green Lake. Green River flows out of the northern end of Green Lake and into Beaver River. Shell Lake Recreation Site Shell Lake Recreation Site () is a provincial recreation site on the western shore of Shell Lake. The park features a small campground and a boat launch for fishing.
