Josef Swickard
Josef Swickard (June 26, 1866 – March 1, 1940) was a Prussian-born American stage and screen character actor, who had toured with stock companies in Europe, South Africa, and South America. Career Swickard emigrated to the United States from the German Empire in 1882. He was a stage actor for several years before entering films with D.W. Griffith in 1912 and by 1914 was playing supporting roles for Mack Sennett. He appeared in Charles Chaplin's ''Laughing Gas'' and ''Caught in a Cabaret''. He remained with Sennett until 1917, when he settled into his prolific career of playing mostly aristocratic characters. Modern audiences are perhaps most familiar with his role of Marcelo Desnoyers, the well-intentioned but impractical French upper class father in Rex Ingram's 1921 film '' The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse''. Lost Film
A lost film is a feature film, feature or short film in which the original negative or copies are not known to exist in any studio archive, private collection, or public archive. Films can be wholly or partially lost for a number of reasons. Early films were not thought to have value beyond their theatrical run, so many were discarded afterward. Nitrate film used in early pictures was highly flammable and susceptible to degradation. The Library of Congress began acquiring copies of American films in 1909, but not all were kept. Due to improvements in film technology and recordkeeping, few films produced in the 1950s or beyond have been lost. Rarely, but occasionally, films classified as lost are found in an uncataloged or miscataloged archive or private collection, becoming "rediscovered films". Billy Franey
William Gerald Franey (June 23, 1889 – December 6, 1940) was an American film actor. Biography Born in Chicago in 1889, Franey appeared in more than 400 films between 1914 and 1941, mostly playing comedic roles. He was an actor of disheveled appearance and fuzzy mustache, usually in a suit a couple of sizes too big. His late career included numerous uncredited appearances in classics like '' Bringing Up Baby'', and he also appeared as the father-in-law of Edgar Kennedy in several of his series of short comedies. Franey contracted influenza and died from complications involving the illness in 1940. Gale Henry, Vivian Oakland, Milburn Morante, Edgar Kennedy, and Max Asher (actor) attended his funeral. Sheldon Lewis
Sheldon Lewis (April 20, 1868 – May 7, 1958) was an American actor of the silent era best known for his antagonistic roles. He appeared in more than 90 films from 1914 to 1936. Biography Sheldon Lewis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married actress Virginia Pearson on April 24, 1911. They were divorced in 1928. An Associated Press news brief about the divorce said that Pearson accused Lewis of "jealousy, ill temper and abuse." However, Pearson's obituary in ''The New York Times'' wrote "throughout the remaining years of their lives, they remained constant companions." The obituary indicated that the divorce was obtained because in that era marriage diminished a female film star's box-office appeal. Lewis died in Los Angeles on May 7th, 1958. His interment was at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park.
