Zebe is a small town in Togo, located on the north side of the lagoon near Aného. It was the second capital of the German colony of Togoland from 1887, when it replaced Bagid (present day Baguida) until 1897, when it was itself replaced by the present capital, Lomé Lomé ( , ) is the Capital (political), capital and List of cities in Togo, largest city of Togo. Aného
Aného, previously known as Anecho, Petit Popo or Little Popo, is a town in southeastern Togo, lying on the Gulf of Guinea near the border of Benin. It is situated 45 km east of the capital Lomé, between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Togo in Maritime Region. History Founded in the late 17th century by Ane people fleeing from Denkyira attacks in Elmina (now in Ghana), Aného developed as a Portuguese slave market and commercial center. The town sheltered Ofori, the king of Accra, after his kingdom was conquered by the Akwamu Kingdom. Little Popo suffered the same fate in April 1702. It was the capital of German Togoland from 1885 to 1887.The nearby town of Zebe became the second capital of German Togoland in 1887. Togoland
Togoland, officially the Togoland Protectorate (; ), was a protectorate of the German Empire in West Africa from 1884 to 1914, encompassing what is now the nation of Togo and most of what is now the Volta Region of Ghana, approximately 90,400 km2 (29,867 sq mi) in size. During the period known as the "Scramble for Africa", the colony was established in 1884 and was gradually extended inland. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the colony was invaded and quickly overrun by British and French forces during the Togoland campaign and placed under military rule. Bagid
Baguida is a canton and city of the suburbs of Lomé, the capital of Togo. It was itself once the capital. Baguida is located approximately 13 kilometers east of Lomé. It is situated between the neighborhoods of Damavo, Kagomé, Avépozo and the littoral, on national highway 5 leading to Cotonou, Benin. History The village of Baguida was created at the end of the 17th century, by a hunter named Sani, a former resident of Bè, today one of Lomé's neighborhoods. This region being located along the Atlantic shore, was at the time completely lush with vegetation and featured numerous game animals and fertile lands. Then, the river Zio ran nearby. Sani and his brethren lived in this natural area, cultivating cereals, tubers and fabaceae plants. ''Deutsches Kolonial-Lexikon'' is the German title for the ''Encyclopedia of German colonies'' which was published in 1920. The text had been finished by 1914 before World War I but was not printed due to the war. Thus it gives a wide range of information and then official views on the German colonial empire, colonies of Germany at the end of its rule. The encyclopedia was published 1920 in three volumes by a committee headed by the former Governor of German East Africa, governor of German East Africa, Heinrich Schnee. It was reprinted in 2006 by Fines Mundi publishers in Saarbrücken. The complete German text has been digitalized and is available online.
