Seattle Cascades
The Seattle Cascades were a charter franchise of World TeamTennis, World Team Tennis (WTT). The team first played as the Hawaii Leis in the league's inaugural 1974 World Team Tennis season, 1974 season, before becoming the Sea-Port Cascades for the 1977 season, when it played half its home matches in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington and the other half in Portland, Oregon. The team left Portland in 1978, and played nearly all its home matches in Seattle. The Cascades announced the team would fold following the 1978 season. Team history Founding and inaugural season The Cascades were founded as WTT's charter franchise for San Diego, California in 1973, by orthodontics, orthodontist Leonard Bloom, Dr. Leonard Bloom. World Team Tennis
World TeamTennis (WTT) was a mixed-gender professional tennis league played with a team format in the United States, which was founded in 1973. The league's season normally took place in the summer months. Players from the ATP and WTA would often take a break from their tour schedules to partake in World TeamTennis. WTT was the first professional sports league to grant equal status to each man and woman competing for their teams. Glynis Coles
Glynis Coles (born 20 February 1954), also known by her married name Glynis Coles-Bond, is a retired English professional tennis player and former British number 2. Career Coles played professionally from 1970 to1988, playing both singles and doubles. Her best singles results in a Grand Slam tournament were at Wimbledon, where she advanced to the round of 16 in 1973 and 1975, losing both times to Margaret Court. As a doubles player, she reached the quarterfinals of many Grand Slam contests, most notably in 1975, when she and Sue Barker made the quarterfinals of all of the Grand Slam events in the same year. Ann Jones (tennis)
Ann Shirley Jones, (born Adrianne Haydon; 17 October 1938), also known as Ann Haydon-Jones, is a British former table tennis and lawn tennis champion. She won eight Grand Slam tennis championships in her career: three in singles, three in women's doubles, and two in mixed doubles. As of 2023, she serves as a vice president of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Career Table tennis Jones was born in Kings Heath, Birmingham, England. Roy Barth
Roy Barth (born March 30, 1947) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Barth, born and raised in San Diego, was a good enough junior tennis player to be selected for America's Junior Davis Cup team. He played varsity tennis while attending UCLA in the late 1960s and had success in doubles with Steve Tidball. The pair were runners-up to Bob Lutz and Stan Smith for the NCAA Division 1 doubles title in 1968. He twice earned All-American honours, in 1968 and 1969. After coming back from two sets down to defeat Miguel Olvera in the first round of the 1969 US Open, Barth made it to the fourth round, which would remain his best Grand Slam performance. Barth, who reached a highest ranking of 8th nationally, competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, but all of his nine singles matches won were on home soil. Maria Bueno
Maria Esther Andion Bueno (11 October 1939 – 8 June 2018) was a Brazilian professional tennis player. During her 11-year career in the 1950s and 1960s, she won 19 Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major titles (seven in women's singles, 11 in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles), making her the most successful South American tennis player in history, and the only one to ever win The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon. Jan Kodeš
Jan Kodeš (born 1 March 1946) is a Czech former professional tennis player. A three-time major singles champion, Kodeš was one of the premier players in the early 1970s. Kodeš's greatest success was achieved on the clay courts of the French Open, where he won the singles title in 1970 and 1971. However, he also won Wimbledon on grass courts in 1973, although the tournament was largely boycotted by top players that year in a show of solidarity over the ban of Nikola Pilić by the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF). Ilie Năstase
Ilie Theodoriu Năstase (; born 19 July 1946) is a Romanian former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the inaugural world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 40 weeks. Năstase is one of ten players to have won over 100 total ATP-level titles, with 64 in singles and 45 in doubles, among which seven majors: two in singles, three in men's doubles and two in mixed doubles. Wendy Overton (born March 31, 1947) is an American former professional tennis player active in the 1970s. She is known mostly for her performance in doubles. She began her tennis career in Florida at the age of 11. She was ranked world No. 1 in juniors and won several US National titles in both singles and doubles. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida on an academic scholarship and was a top-ranked collegiate player from 1965 to 1969.
