Muscicapidae
The Old World flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae, of small passerine birds restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia), with the exception of several vagrants and two species, bluethroat (''Luscinia svecica'') and northern wheatear (''Oenanthe oenanthe''), found also in North America. These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which, as the name implies, take their prey on the wing. The family is relatively large and includes 357 species, which are divided into 57 genera. Taxonomy The name Muscicapa for the family was introduced by the Scottish naturalist John Fleming in 1822. The word had earlier been used for the genus '' Muscicapa'' by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760. Muscicapa comes from the Latin '' musca'' meaning a fly, and '' capere'' to catch. In 1910, the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert found it impossible to define boundaries between the three families Muscicapidae, Sylviidae (Old World warblers) and Tu ...

Forest Scrub Robin
The forest scrub robin (''Tychaedon leucosticta'') is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is disjunctly present throughout the African tropical rainforest. This species was formerly placed in the genus '' Cercotrichas''. Four subspecies are recognised: * ''T. l. colstoni'' (Tye, 1991) – Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast * ''T. l. leucosticta'' ( Sharpe, 1883) – Ghana * ''T. l. collsi'' (Alexander Alexander () is a male name of Greek origin. Northern Scrub Robin
The northern scrub robin (''Drymodes superciliaris'') is a species of bird in the family Petroicidae. It is found in northern Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. It was found to be genetically distinct from the Papuan scrub robin, which were thought to be members of the same species. A putative subspecies ''D. s. colcloughi'', known as the Roper River scrub robin, was described by Gregory Mathews in 1914 from specimens supposedly collected from the Northern Territory The Northern Territory (abbreviated as NT; known formally as the Northern Territory of Australia and informally as the Territory) is an states and territories of Australia, Australian internal territory in the central and central-northern regi ... of Australia. However, there have been no further records from the area, the provenance of the specimens has been questioned, and the taxon is controversial. Southern Scrub Robin
The southern scrub robin (''Drymodes brunneopygia'') is a species of bird in the family Petroicidae. It is endemism, endemic to Australia, where it occurs in mallee (habit), mallee and heathland in the semi-arid southern parts of the continent, extending from Wyperfeld National Park in Victoria in the east through South Australia to the west coast between Kalbarri, Western Australia, Kalbarri and the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park. Taxonomy The southern scrub robin was Species description, formally described in 1841 by the English ornithologist John Gould under the current binomial name ''Drymodes brunneopygia''. Gould noted that the bird was found near the Murray River in South Australia. The specific epithet combines the Modern Latin ''brunneus'' meaning "brown" with the Ancient Greek ''-pugios'' meaning "-rumped". The species is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised. Description It is a relatively dull and large robin, adults being around in length, of which around a th ...

Drymodes
''Drymodes'' is a genus of birds in the family Petroicidae. It was traditionally held to have two species, but molecular and behavioural differences led to the split of the New Guinea populations from the northern scrub robin. The paper by Les Christidis and colleagues was published in 2011 and the IOC adopted the split in 2015: Species The genus contains the following three species: References * Del Hoyo, J.; Elliot, A. & Christie D. Petroicidae
The bird family Petroicidae includes 51 species in 19 genera. All are endemic to Australasia: New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand and numerous Pacific Islands as far east as Samoa. For want of an accurate common name, the family is often called the Australasian robins. Within the family species are known variously as robins, scrub-robins and flyrobins. They are only distantly related to the European robin of Europe, north Africa and western Asia, a member of family Muscicapidae. Characteristics Most species have a compact build with a large, rounded head, a short, straight bill, and rounded wingtips. They occupy a wide range of wooded habitats, from subalpine to tropical rainforest, and mangrove swamps to semi-arid scrubland. All are primarily insectivorous, although a few supplement their diet with seeds. Hunting is mostly by perch and pounce, a favoured tactic being to cling sideways onto a treetrunk and scan the ground below without moving. Social organisation is usually cente ...

The bearded scrub robin (''Tychaedon quadrivirgata''), also known as the eastern bearded scrub robin, is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is found in eastern and southern Africa. This species was formerly placed in the genus '' Cercotrichas''. Taxonomy This species was described as ''Thamnobia quadrivirgata'' by the German ornithologist Anton Reichenow in 1879. It was formerly placed in the genus ''Erythropygia''. It forms a superspecies with the forest scrub robin, miombo scrub robin and brown scrub robin.. Two subspecies of ''T. quadrivirgata'' are recognized: ''T. q. greenwayi'' in the Zanzibar and Mafia Islands, and ''T. q. quadrivirgata'' in the rest of the range. The specific epithet ''quadrivirgata'' means "four-striped" in Latin. The species is so named because of four diagnostic stripes on its face. Description Its length is , and its weight is approximately . The male and female are alike, with the female being slightly smaller. The crown and upperparts ...

Cercotrichas
''Cercotrichas'' is a genus of medium-sized insectivorous birds. They were formerly considered to be in the thrush (bird), thrush family, (Turdidae), but are more often now treated as part of the Old World flycatcher family, (Muscicapidae). Taxonomy The genus ''Cercotrichas'' was introduced in 1831 by the German zoologist Friedrich Boie. The type species was subsequently designated as ''Turdus erythropterus'' Johann Friedrich Gmelin, Gmelin which is a junior synonym of ''Turdus podobe'' Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller, Müller, the black scrub robin. The genus name ''Cercotrichas'' is from Ancient Greek ''kerkos'' meaning "tail" and ''trikhas'' meaning "thrush". This genus formerly included additional species. A molecular phylogenetic study of the Muscicapidae by Min Zhao and collaborators published in 2023 found that the genus ''Cercotrichas'' was paraphyletic. In the rearrangement to create monophyletic genera five species were moved to the resurrected genus ''Tychaedon'' that h ...
