Screwgun
Screwgun Records is a jazz record label founded by saxophonist Tim Berne in 1996. Most releases on the label have been by Berne, though some have been by Berne's associates and bandmates. Steve Byram has designed and illustrated the artwork for many of the label's albums.''Eye'', Number 42, Volume 11, Winter 2001. After attending college in Oregon, Berne moved to New York City in the 1970s to meet saxophonist Julius Hemphill, whose music had inspired him to become a jazz musician. Hemphill became his mentor, giving him saxophone lessons and helping him find his way in the music business. Berne founded Empire Records in the late 1970s to issue own albums. He released five albums, and his work was noticed by Giovanni Bonandrini, an Italian producer who issued Berne's next two albums on Soul Note. Berne signed with Columbia Records in the 1980s, then recorded for JMT Records until it shut down in 1995. Then Berne founded Screwgun to get control of his work again. Screwgun albums were ... Tim Berne
Tim Berne (born October 16, 1954) is an American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and record label owner. His primary instruments are the alto and baritone saxophones. Biography Berne was born in Syracuse, New York, United States. He has said that he had no interest in playing an instrument until he attended Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. He was a fan of rhythm and blues, and it seemed to him that Hemphill was playing jazz with the soulfulness of R&B. In 1974, he went to New York to find Hemphill, who gave him saxophone lessons and advice on how to manage his career. Berne started the record label Empire in 1979. For Empire, he recorded four albums with avant-garde jazz musicians such as John Carter, Alex Cline, Nels Cline, Olu Dara, Vinny Golia, Paul Motian, and Ed Schuller. His next two albums appeared on Soul Note in the early 1980s. In these sessions he worked with Motian, Sc ... Saturation Point (album)
''Saturation Point'' is a live album by saxophonist Tim Berne's Bloodcount which was recorded in 1997 and released on Berne's Screwgun label. accessed October 13, 2014 Reception The review by William York said "the album is every bit as strong as the group's earlier releases. What's more, the sound quality exceeds that of Bloodcount's other live Screwgun albums, and the performances, while still longer than ten minutes in each case, are a bit more concise than before... Berne's horn playing sounds especially ornery on this album, including some painful shrieks and scrapes that aren't usually part of his style. However, even taking this slight reservation (if one can call it that) int ...[...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Unwound (Tim Berne Album)
''Unwound'' is a live 3-CD set by saxophonist Tim Berne's Bloodcount which was recorded in 1996 and released on Berne's Screwgun label. The album was the label's first release following the demise of Berne's previous label JMT Records. Reception The AllMusic review by Joslyn Lane said "This is a great box set, recommended for all big fans of Bloodcount. The uninitiated should start with a smaller dose, such as '' Saturation Point'' or ''Discretion'', since Bloodcount's music requires long attention spans (the tracks are over 20 minutes, on average) to reap the musical rewards".Lane, J.Allmusic Reviewaccessed October 13, 2014 Writing for All About Jazz, Glenn Astarita stated "This is not easy listening for the faint at heart (although, it is less avante than one might assume). Bloodcount ''Unwound'' is a series of startling "live" performances by this tight and extremely adventurous unit. No place to hide here. It's difficult music to perform with plenty of surprises for almost ev ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Reception The AllMusic review awarded the album 4 stars.Allmusic Review accessed October 15, 2014 In Jazziz, Steve Dollar wrote "The music burns but it also makes sense. ''Discretion'' is a live album by saxophonist Tim Berne's Bloodcount which was recorded in 1997 and released on Berne's Screwgun label. accessed October 13, 2014 Reception The review by Joslyn Layne said "The musicians are brilliantly creative and experienced enough not to get lost in all the room provided by these large time frames. Each player has boundless creative energy, matched only by technical ability-- they never seem to tire, only to get more worked up and inspired. In the always-live recordings, Bloodcount constantly morph and shape-shift musical ideas, and keep the compositions breathing through exploitation of the whole range of dynamics... so even if some of the songs on ...[...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Feign (album)
''Feign'' is a studio album by saxophonist Tim Berne's Hard Cell which was recorded in 2005 at The Clubhouse Recording Studio and released on Berne's Screwgun label. Reception The AllMusic review awarded the album 4½ stars stating "''Feign'' is a blast of energized modern creative music, free improvisation corralled into appealing structures, and even moments of unexpected lyricism and beauty. It is 100 percent Tim Berne at his best, brought to full realization along with long-term collaborator Rainey and that relatively new kid on the Brooklyn block, Craig Taborn, who demonstrates without a doubt that he has become a full-fledged resident of Berne's musical neighborhood".Allmusic Review accessed October 15, 2014 Writing in '' [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
