Scottish Courage
Scottish & Newcastle plc was a brewing company headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, which expanded from its home base to become an international business with beer volumes growing almost tenfold. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange until it was acquired by Heineken International, Heineken and Carlsberg Group, Carlsberg in 2008 and its assets split between them. The name Scottish & Newcastle continued to be used for the UK trading operation of Heineken International until 2009, when it was renamed Heineken UK. The former S&N Pub Enterprises leased pub division was rebranded as S&N Pub Company after the takeover. In 2012, it was rebranded again to Star Pubs & Bars, bringing an end to Scottish & Newcastle brand. Courage was an English brewery, founded by John Courage in London, England, in 1787. History Origin and family ownership The Courage Brewery was started by John Courage (1757 – October 1793). He was a Scottish shipping agent believed to be of French Huguenot descent hailing from Aberdeen, although other sources suggest his family may have originated from Flanders, as there were no records of French Huguenot immigration to Aberdeen and there was a stronger tradition of brewing in that region. John Courage moved to London in or about 1780 to become an agent for the Glasgow shipping firm of Carron. His work was located at Glasgow Wharf (just downstream from the Tower of London). Caledonian Brewery was a Scottish brewery founded in 1869 in the Shandon, Edinburgh, Shandon area of Edinburgh, Scotland. History Early years When it was founded in 1869, the brewery was named the Lorimer and Clark Caledonian Brewery, after its founders George Lorimer and Robert Clark. McEwan's is a brand of beer owned by Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company. It was originally brewed by William McEwan's Fountain Brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland. The McEwan's brand passed to Heineken in 2008 after their purchase of Scottish & Newcastle's British operations. Heineken sold the brand to Wells & Young's in 2011, who sold their brewing operation, including the McEwan brand to Marston's in 2017. Cans and bottles are now brewed in Bedford, England. Scrumpy Jack is a brand of dry cider, 6% alcohol by volume (ABV), produced in England. Previously it was of a stronger ABV of 7.5%, but this was changed some years ago due to taxes and licensing. It is currently produced in Hereford by H. P. Bulmer, a subsidiary of Heineken International. Scrumpy Jack is also produced under licence in Devon by Czk1.
