Santi Nazaro E Celso (Brescia)
The church of Santi Nazaro e Celso is located on Corso Giacomo Matteotti, at the intersection with via Fratelli Bronzetti, in Brescia, Lombardy, Italy. The church contains the ''Averoldi Polyptych'' (1522), a masterwork of Titian. History Originally a church was found at approximately the same site in 1222, in an area that was soon enclosed by enlarged city walls. A major reconstruction began in 1746, by designs of abate Zinelli, and completed in 1781, leading to the statue-topped neoclassical facade we see today. It was interrupted in 1769 by an Brescia explosion, accidental explosion of a powder magazine at nearby Porta Nazaro. Reconstruction finally ceased and worship was resumed in 1780. Lattanzio Gambara
Lattanzio Gambara (c. 1530 – 18 March 1574) was an Italian painter, active in Renaissance and Mannerism, Mannerist styles. It is likely that Gambara is the same 16th century painter referred to as ''Lattanzio Cremonese'' or ''Lattanzio da Cremona''. Biography Born in Brescia, Gambara initially apprenticed, aged fifteen, with Giulio Campi in Cremona. By 1549 he was working alongside Girolamo Romanino, who became his father-in-law. Gambara's work also shows the influence of il Pordenone. An altarpiece of S. Maria in Silva dates to 1558. He painted frescoes in the Villa Contarini in Asolo. Another fresco cycle on the ''History of the Apocalypse'' decorated the Loggia of Brescia, until it was destroyed by bombing in 1944. Francesco Polazzo (1683–1753) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period, active mainly in Venice. Giambattista Pittoni or Giovanni Battista Pittoni (6 June 1687 – 6 November 1767) was a Venetian painter of the late Baroque or Rococo period. ''Adoration of the Shepherds with Saints Nazarius and Celsus'' is a 1540 oil on canvas painting by Moretto da Brescia in the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia. As its title suggests, it shows Nazarius and Celsus, patron saints of the church. It is one of the painter's most-discussed works and shows his gradual but decisive move towards Mannerism. It was only securely attributed to him from the late 20th century onwards. It includes several unusual compositional elements influenced by other artists. A restoration in 1987 also showed a huge number of pentimenti and corrections. It is first recorded in 1630 by Bernardino Faino as an altarpiece in the Averoldi Chapel in Santi Nazaro e Celso - he attributed it to Luca Mombello, who had also painted the frescoes on the chapel walls. Alessandro Bonvicino (also Buonvicino) (possibly 22 December 1554), more commonly known as Moretto, or in Italian Il Moretto da Brescia (the Moor of Brescia), was an Italian Renaissance painter from Brescia, where he also mostly worked. His dated works span the period from 1524 to 1554, but he was already described as a master in 1516. He was mainly a painter of altarpieces that tend towards sedateness, mostly for churches in and around Brescia, but also in Bergamo, Milan, Verona, and Asola; many remain in the churches they were painted for. The majority of these are on canvas, but a considerable number, including some large pieces, are created on wood panels. There are only a few surviving drawings from the artist.
