Sanrio Character Rankings
The Sanrio Character Rankings are an annual popularity poll in which users vote for their favourite Sanrio character. The popularity poll has been conducted every year since 1986. Previously conducted via Sanrio's official monthly newspaper, the '' Strawberry Newspaper'', the ranking is now conducted online. From the official Sanrio Character Ranking 2025 website FAQs: "The Sanrio character ranking is an annual, popularity contest for Sanrio characters and this year marks its 40th year! The 90 characters included have been chosen after careful consideration from various perspectives." The Character Cinnamoroll has been incredibly popular in the rankings in recent years, having won seven out of eight times between 2017 and 2024. Hello Kitty topped the list for the first time in 1998 and remains in the all-time lead, having topped the list fifteen times as of 2024. This is a list of characters from Sanrio, a Japanese company specialized in creating kawaii (cute) characters. Sanrio sells and licenses products branded with these characters and has created over 450 characters. Their most successful and best known character, Hello Kitty, was created in 1974. Most Sanrio characters are anthropomorphized animals, while a few are humans or anthropomorphized objects. Sanrio began creating characters to increase sales of its merchandise. The , also known as the ''Strawberry News'', is a Japanese monthly magazine published by Sanrio. It was first published in 1975 and is aimed at children, primarily girls. It contains news on Sanrio's products and characters, the most well-known of which is Hello Kitty. The magazine is published in a large size tabloid format and printed in full color. It has been in continuous publication since 1975, and as of 2019 six hundred issues had been published, and according to Sanrio, each new issue was printed in 100,000 copies. The first issue of the magazine was published in April 1975, had the American dog character Snoopy on the cover and cost 100 yen. As of 2025, the cost per issue is 220 yen. Cinnamoroll
is a character series created by Sanrio in 2001, with character designs from Miyuki Okumura. The main character, Cinnamoroll, is a white puppy with chubby and pink cheeks, long ears, blue eyes, and a tail that resembles a cinnamon roll. He starred in his own manga series, an anime movie, and various animation shorts. In its initial run, the series expanded into two official side series: in 2005, which focuses on Azuki, Mocha, and Chiffon and in 2007, which focuses on both Berry and Cherry. , also known by her real name , is a fictional character created by Yuko Shimizu, currently designed by Yuko Yamaguchi, and owned by the Japanese company Sanrio. Sanrio depicts Hello Kitty as a British anthropomorphized white cat with a red bow and no visible mouth. Jewelpet
is a Japanese media franchise and toy line created in 2008 as a joint venture between Sanrio and Sega Toys, produced by the third character designer of Hello Kitty, Yuko Yamaguchi and illustrated by the character designer of Cinnamoroll, Miyuki Okumura. The franchise was originally launched on January 15, 2008, focusing on animals named after jewels, birthstones and minerals, who can use magic using their eyes. Due to its success, Sanrio and Sega Toys expanded the Jewelpet franchise overseas. The franchise is currently being licensed by Italian company Giochi Preziosi for its European release.
