Santa Rosa () is a department in Guatemala. The capital is Cuilapa. History 1913 earthquake On Saturday 8 March 1913, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit Santa Rosa, destroying its department capital, Cuilapa. Both the initial quake and the after shocks destroyed a lot of private homes, and also the cathedral and the prison, leaving behind significant human losses; similar destruction occurred at Barberena, Cerro Redondo, Llano Grande and El Zapote. Fraijanes, Pueblo Nuevo Viñas, Coatepeque and Jalpatagua were also affected. Around Cuilapa, there were landslides and road blockades, and even a long crack was reported at Los Esclavos hill. Escobal Mine
The Escobal mine is a large mining, silver mine located east of San Rafael Las Flores in the south of Guatemala in Santa Rosa Department, Guatemala, Santa Rosa Department. Escobal represents one of the largest silver reserve not just in Guatemala but in the world, having estimated reserves of 367.5 million oz of silver. Exploration was by Goldcorp beginning in 2007. The mine was sold to Tahoe Resources in 2011. In April 2013 the mine was granted a 25 year license. The local Xinca people have led Escobal mine protests, protests opposing the Escobal mine, raising issues of environmental risks and land sovereignty rights, but the protests have been suppressed by the Guatemalan government. Escobal Mine Protests
The Escobal mine protests are a series of political protests opposing the Escobal mine, a large Silver mining, silver mine developed by Canada, Canadian mining company Tahoe Resources in San Rafael Las Flores, Guatemala. Since 2009 various community groups have advocated against the mine, citing risks of Environmental degradation, environmental damage and the land sovereignty rights of the indigenous Xinca people. These groups have employed Nonviolent resistance, nonviolent protest tactics such as blockading mine property and voting in municipal referendums, which found that over 95% of residents in surrounding communities opposed the Escobal mine. The protests have been met with systematic violence from both state forces and Escobal's private security, including shootings, kidnappings, and an official State of emergency, state of siege declared in May 2013 to suppress public opposition.
