''Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa's Revenge'' is the fourth in SNK's flagship ''Samurai Shodown'' series of fighting games. Chronologically, it is the second and final chapter of a story between ''Samurai Shodown (1993 video game), Samurai Shodown'' and ''Samurai Shodown II'', with ''Samurai Shodown III'' being the first chapter. ''Samurai Shodown!'' on the Neo Geo Pocket is a monochrome adaptation of this game, and it was followed by ''Samurai Shodown! 2'' on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, which is a 2D adaptation of ''Samurai Shodown 64: Warriors Rage''. Gameplay The ability to select from "Slash" and "Bust" versions of characters is retained from ''Samurai Shodown III''. Among other series changes, aerial blocking was removed entirely. One can also no longer charge one's own "pow" gauge. The off-screen delivery man was omitted entirely from the game. ''Samurai Shodown'', known in Japan as is a fighting game series by SNK. The series began in 1993 and is known for being one of the earliest in the genre with a primary focus on weapon-based combat. Plot The stories in the series take place in 18th-century Japan, during the Sakoku or seclusion period of Japan (the first four games run across 1788 and 1789) with great artistic license so that foreign-born characters (including some from places that did not exist as such in 1788) and fictional monsters can also be part of the story. The plot of each game is quite different, but they circle a central group of characters and a region in Japan. The Neo Geo Pocket series is a line of handheld game consoles developed and manufactured by SNK between 1998 and 2001. It began with the monochrome released in Japan on October 28, 1998 as SNK's first handheld system and a direct competitor to Nintendo's long-running Game Boy line. In response to the growing popularity of color handhelds, SNK released the upgraded on March 19, 1999 in Japan, featuring a color screen and full backward compatibility with games for the original model.
