Sound Editor (filmmaking)
A sound editor is a creative professional responsible for selecting and assembling sound recordings in preparation for the final sound mixing or mastering of a television program, motion picture, video game, or any production involving recorded or synthetic sound. The sound editor works with the supervising sound editor. The supervising sound editor often assigns scenes and reels the sound editor based on the editor's strengths and area of expertise. Sound editing developed out of the need to fix the incomplete, undramatic, or technically inferior sound recordings of early talkies, and over the decades has become a respected filmmaking craft, with sound editors implementing the aesthetic goals of motion picture sound design. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes the artistic contribution of exceptional sound editing with the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Ray West
George Raymond West (November 29, 1925 – February 17, 2016) was an American audio engineering, sound engineer. He won an Academy Awards, Academy Award for Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound for the film ''Star Wars (film), Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope''. He worked on over 60 films between 1977 and 1993. West also did extensive work in television. He was nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards and, in 1978, won an award for sound mixing for the NBC TV movie ''The Winds of Kitty Hawk'' (1978), starring Michael Moriarty, and, in 1986, for ''Unnatural Causes (1986 film), Unnatural Causes'', starring John Ritter. West died in February 2016 at the age of 90. Benjamin Burtt Jr. (born July 12, 1948) is an American sound designer, film director and editor, screenwriter, and voice actor. As a sound designer, his credits include the ''Star Wars'' and ''Indiana Jones'' film series, '' Invasion of the Body Snatchers'' (1978), '' E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'' (1982), ''WALL-E'' (2008), and ''Star Trek'' (2009). Burtt is notable for popularizing the Wilhelm scream in-joke and creating many of the iconic sound effects heard in the ''Star Wars'' film franchise, including the 'voice' of R2-D2, the lightsaber hum, the sound of the blaster guns, the heavy-breathing sound of Darth Vader and creating the Ewoks’ language, ewokese. Michael Minkler (born 14 May 1952) is a motion picture sound re-recording mixer. He has received Academy Awards for his work on '' Dreamgirls'', '' Chicago'' and '' Black Hawk Down''.
