Saltigi
The Saltigue (other spelling: Saltigué, Saltigui or Saltigi in Serer), are Serer high priests and priestesses who preside over the religious ceremonies and affairs of the Serer people, such as the ''Xooy'' (or ''Xoy'') ceremony, the biggest event in the Serer religious calendar. They usually come from ancient Serer paternal families, and the title is inherited by birthright. In Serer country, ''Saltigue'' are always diviners. Etymology In Serer, ''Saltigue'' and its spelling variations derive from two Serer words: "sal" and "tigui"; ''sal'' means "meeting point of two ways, place where one branch branches into two other branches. And by analogy, beam on which the roof of the hut rests." ''Tigui'' means "resting the roof of the hut." Xooy
The Xooy (meaning "macerate" in Serer, sometimes spelled XoyAfrica Consultants International (2000), ''Yëgóo: magazine d'échanges inter-culturels, Issues 0-11'', p. lix or Khoy) is a Serer divination ceremony held once a year in Fatick, Senegal. The Xooy is one of the most important and well known ceremonies in the Serer religious calendar, and is a national event in Senegal's cultural calendar which attracts government officials and dignitaries. The ceremony is held yearly at the Centre MALANGO in Sine, Senegal and attracts a large crowd from Senegal, and Serers from neighbouring Gambia and the diaspora. It is somewhat of a yearly pilgrimage. The Lebou also attend the ceremony in homage to their Serer ancestors. The Lebou ''genies'' are actual the Serer pangool. Silatigi
Silatigi (variant spellings include Satigi, Silati and Solatigi) was a title used in the Mali Empire which survived in several societies in the region, notably the Denianke Kingdom of Futa Toro. Etymology In Mande, the term "silatigi" derives from "sili" meaning road, and "tigi" meaning master or leader. Thus the "silatigi" is the one who leads the community in following the right path, physical or spiritual. Serer Language
Serer, often broken into differing regional dialects such as Serer-Sine and Serer-Saloum, is a language of the Senegambian branch of the Niger–Congo family spoken by 1.2 million people in Senegal and 30,000 in the Gambia as of 2009. It is the principal language of the Serer people, and was the language of the early modern kingdoms of Sine, Saloum, and Baol. Serer is primarily written in the Latin alphabet. Classification Serer is one of the Senegambian languages, which are characterized by consonant mutation. The traditional classification of Atlantic languages is that of Sapir (1971), which found that Serer was closest to Fulani. However, a widely cited misreading of the data by Wilson (1989) inadvertently exchanged Serer for Wolof. The landed gentry, or the gentry (sometimes collectively known as the squirearchy), is a largely historical Irish and British social class of landowners who could live entirely from rental income, or at least had a country estate. Lamane Jegan Joof
Lamane Jegan Joof ( Serer: Laamaan Jeegaan Jaay Juuf, also Ndigan Dieye Diouf,) was a Serer lamane who according to Serer tradition founded the Serer village of Tukar now part of present-day Senegal. The ''Raan Festival'' (a major event in the Serer religious calendar) takes place each year at Tukar, two weeks after the appearance of the new moon in April. Joof Family
The Joof family is one of the old Senegambian royal families of Serer people, Serer ethnicity. The surname Joof, also spelt Juuf or ''Juf'' (in Serer language, Serer and Cangin languages, Cangin), ''Joof'' (Gambian English, English spelling in the Gambia) or ''Diouf'' (French spelling in Senegal and Mauritania), is a surname that is typically Serer. Though there are multiple spellings for this surname, they all refer to the same people. The differences in spelling came about because Senegal and Mauritania were colonized by France, while the Gambia was colonized by the United Kingdom. Pangool
Pangool (in Serer and Cangin) singular: Fangool (var : ''Pangol'' and ''Fangol''), are the ancient saints and ancestral spirits of the Serer people of Senegal, the Gambia and Mauritania. The Pangool play a crucial role in Serer religion and history. In a religious sense, they act as interceders between the living world and the supreme being Roog or Koox. In a historical sense, the ancient Serer village and town founders called Lamanes were believed to be accompanied by a group of Pangool as they travelled in search of land to exploit. Diakhao Arrondissement ( Serer proper : Jaxaaw) is an arrondissement of the Fatick Department in the Fatick Region of Senegal. Its capital is Diakhao. Tukar
Tukar ( Serer: A Tukaar, other variations: ''Toukar'' or ''Toucar'') a large village in Senegal. Attached to the rural community of Ngayokhem, it is located in the area of the pre-colonial Kingdom of Sine, west of Senegal. The population is mostly made up of by the Serers. As of 2006 to 2007, the population was estimated at 3000. Ndokh, which was a colony of Tukar, is now a separate village.
