Sal Aunese
Siasau "Sal" Aunese (May 8, 1968 – September 23, 1989) was a college football player who played for the University of Colorado. Aunese was from Oceanside, California in San Diego County and was of Samoan He died at age 21 from stomach cancer. Early life Born in Oceanside in northern San Diego County, Aunese was raised there with his six siblings. His parents spoke Samoan at home growing up. He was an All-American Quarterback at Vista High School, where he and his teammates won not only the C.I.F. San Diego section championship, but also the state championship. He attracted interest from several college programs including the University of Nebraska and the University of Colorado. 1988 Freedom Bowl
The 1988 Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, California, pitted former Mountain States Conference rivals BYU and Colorado for the first time in a bowl game. It was only the second time the two teams met one another in football since the Buffaloes joined the Big Eight forty years earlier; the Buffaloes were favored in this bowl by three points. Bill McCartney
William Paul McCartney (August 22, 1940 – January 10, 2025) was an American college football coach who was the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes for 13 seasons ( 1982–1994). He compiled a record, and won three consecutive Big Eight Conference titles (1989–1991). McCartney's 1990 team was crowned as national champions by the Associated Press, splitting the title with Georgia Tech, who was first in the final Coaches' Poll. McCartney was the founder of the Promise Keepers men's ministry. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2013. 1989 Colorado Buffaloes Football Team
The 1989 Colorado Buffaloes football team represented the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Big Eight Conference during the 1989 NCAA Division I-A football season. Colorado finished with the most wins in school history, surpassing the 1971 team, and their first conference championship in thirteen years. The Buffaloes went undefeated in the regular season at 11–0 (7–0 in Big 8) and played for the national title, but lost to fourth-ranked Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. The team dedicated the season to senior and former starting quarterback Sal Aunese, who was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late March, and died at age 21 on September 23 due to complications from the disease. Vomiting (also known as emesis, puking and throwing up) is the forceful expulsion of the contents of one's stomach through the mouth and sometimes the nose.
