Saginaw Gears (IHL)
The Saginaw Gears were a minor-league ice hockey franchise based in Saginaw, Michigan, that played in the defunct International Hockey League (IHL). The Gears existed from 1972 to 1983 and played their home games at Wendler Arena in the Saginaw Civic Center (now known as The Dow Event Center). IHL hockey would later return to the Tri-Cities when the Flint Generals were moved to Saginaw to become the Saginaw Generals for the 1985–1986 season. Championships The Gears made the playoffs for nine straight seasons, from 1973 to 1982. The Gears reached the Turner Cup Finals five times in that stretch, and won the following championships: Trivia The Turner Cup replica at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto has Saginaw misspelled as "Sagimaw" for the 1976-77 championship. Saginaw Gears (NAHL)
The Saginaw Gears were a junior ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League. The team played out of the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena in Saginaw, Michigan. History In 1991, the NAHL approved adding an expansion team from Saginaw. The club took the same name as the former IHL team though they use a different color scheme and logo. The team was largely unsuccessful for their first three years, however, the club was finally able to finish with a winning record in 1995 under Dave Westner, who had played for the original Gears. In December of that year, the team was in the middle of their second winning campaign when they were abruptly moved to Gaylord, Michigan and became the Gaylord Grizzlies The Gaylord Grizzlies were a junior ice hockey team that played in the North American Hockey League.
