Saginaw Bay Southern (reporting marks SBS) was a shortline railroad operating in the lower peninsula of Michigan. The railroad was a subsidiary of Lake State Railway until the two companies merged in 2012. It interchanged with CSX Transportation in Mount Morris, Michigan, the Huron and Eastern Railway in Saginaw, Michigan and Midland, Michigan and the Mid-Michigan Railroad in Paines, Michigan. Mount Morris, Michigan
Mount Morris is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,086 at the 2010 census. The city is bordered by Mount Morris Township on the west and Genesee Township on the east. It was named after Mount Morris, New York, because many of the early settlers had come from there. It is part of the Flint metropolitan area. History Benjamin Pearson was the first settler in the area in 1833. In 1836, Frederick Walker was the first to settle within the future village site. A post office named Mount Morris was established on July 11, 1837, with Charles N. Beecher as the first postmaster. Huron and Eastern Railway is a short line railroad operating of track in The Thumb and Flint/Tri-Cities area of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It is currently owned by Genesee & Wyoming, Inc., who purchased it from RailAmerica in 2012. Its headquarters is in the former Michigan Central Railroad depot in Vassar, Michigan. History HESR began operations in 1986, over 83 miles of former Chesapeake and Ohio track in Michigan's thumb area. This track served areas in Huron and Sanilac Counties, roughly between Bad Axe and Croswell, with a few spurs to outlying small towns. On December 22, 1988, HESR acquired CSX Transportation's Bad Axe Subdivision between Saginaw and Bad Axe. The Mid-Michigan Railroad is a railroad owned by Genesee & Wyoming. It operates of track in Michigan. History The company incorporated in 1987, for the purpose of acquiring railway lines from the CSX Corporation. The company was owned at inception by RailTex, a Texas-based holding company which owned many short line railroads. The Mid-Michigan bought two lines from CSX: Elmdale– Greenville and Paines– Elwell. In 1999 it sold the southernmost of Elmdale line, Elmdale–Malta, back to CSX.Meints (2005), 365. Meints gives Elmdale-Ionia as the branch, but this is incorrect and contradicted elsewhere. Shields is an unincorporated community in Thomas Township, Saginaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is also a census-designated place (CDP) for statistical purposes, but with no legal status as an incorporated municipality. The population of the CDP was 7,035 at the 2020 census. The community of Shields is located on M-46/Gratiot Road just west of the Tittabawassee River. In the 2000 census, the CDP included an area bounded on the east by the Tittabawassee River, north to State Street, west to N. Miller Road, south to Geddes Road, west to N.
