The Russian Airborne Forces (russian: Воздушно-десантные войска России, ВДВ, Vozdushno-desantnye voyska Rossii, VDV) are the airborne forces branch of the Russian Armed Forces. It was formed in 1992 from units of the Soviet Airborne Forces that came under Russian control following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Troops of the Russian Airborne Forces have traditionally worn a blue beret and blue-striped '' telnyashka'' undershirt and are called ''desant'' (Russian: Десант) from the French ''Descente''. Georgy Ivanovich Shpak (russian: Георгий Иванович Шпак) was the governor of Ryazan Oblast, Russia from 2004 to 2008. He was the commander of Russian Airborne Troops from 1996 to 2003. Biography Early life Born September 8, 1943, in Osipovichi, Mogilev region USSR to Ivan Antonovich, who worked the railroad during his lifetime, and Anna Akimovna, who worked as an accountant. He enrolled and graduated from the Minsk Railway School majoring in locomotive engineering, locksmithing and as an electrician for locomotives. The Russian telnyashka ( rus, тельняшка, p=tʲɪlʲˈnʲaʂkə) is an undershirt horizontally striped in white and blue (occasionally black or green) and which may be sleeveless. It is an iconic uniform garment worn by various Russian military formations. Airborne Forces
Airborne forces, airborne troops, or airborne infantry are ground combat units carried by aircraft and airdropped into battle zones, typically by parachute drop or air assault. Parachute-qualified infantry and support personnel serving in airborne units are also known as paratroopers.
