Russell, Manitoba
Russell is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, Manitoba. It is located along PTH 16 and PTH 83, and is at the western terminus of PTH 45. Russell is approximately east of the Saskatchewan border and northwest of Winnipeg. The community is home to 1,611 people as of the 2011 census. The community was designated as a town prior to 1 January 2015, when it and the nearby Village of Binscarth amalgamated with the Rural Municipality of Russell. Russell is the home of Manitoba's Beef and Barley Festival, which is held annually in October to celebrate the region's strong agricultural tradition. The ''Winnipeg Free Press'' (or WFP; founded as the ''Manitoba Free Press'') is a daily (excluding Sunday) broadsheet newspaper in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Provincial Trunk Highway 83 (PTH 83) is a major north-south highway that runs in the far western region of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It travels from the North Dakota border south of Melita, north through Virden, Birtle, Russell, and Roblin to its northern terminus with PTH 10 in the town of Swan River. Along with US 83, PTH 83 is part of the longest continuously numbered north-south highway in North America with a combined distance of . The Rural Municipality of Russell is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on August 15, 1881. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Town of Russell and the Village of Binscarth to form the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth. The former RM is located in the Parkland Region of the province adjacent to the Gambler 63 First Nations Indian reserve to the south. It had a population of 661 according to the Canada 2006 Census. The 2015 municipal amalgamations in Manitoba was the result of new legislation (''Municipal Amalgamations Act'') in the province that required a minimum population threshold of 1,000 people in order to incorporate a municipality. To meet this new threshold, Manitoba's smaller municipalities—those with a population of less than 1,000—merged with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. Binscarth is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, Manitoba. It is located approximately northwest of Brandon, south from Russell, and east of the Saskatchewan border. Prior to 1 January 2015, it was designated as a village. The economic base of Binscarth and area is a mix of agriculture and service businesses. Major industrial employers in the area include three potash mines nearby in Saskatchewan (Nutrien in Rocanville, and Mosaic K1 in Esterhazy and K2 in Gerald) and a canola crushing plant ( Bunge) at Harrowby Manitoba.
