Roper Gulf Region
Roper Gulf Regional Council is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. The region covers an area of and had a population of 7,397 in June 2018. History In October 2006 the Northern Territory Government announced the reform of local government areas. The intention of the reform was to improve and expand the delivery of services to towns and communities across the Northern Territory by establishing eleven new shires. The Roper-Gulf Shire was created on 1 July 2008 as were the remaining ten shires. On 1 January 2014, the Shire was renamed to Roper Gulf Regional Council. Elections for the Councillors in the Region were held on 25 October 2008. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is the independent statutory agency of the Australian Government responsible for statistical collection and analysis and for giving evidence-based advice to federal, state and territory governments. Numbulwar, Northern Territory
Numbulwar, formerly known as Rose River Mission,https://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/placenames/view.jsp?id=22449 is a small, primarily Aboriginal community on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory of Australia. The major language group of the community is Nunggubuyu and their language, Wubuy, is used by older generations. Kriol is also widely spoken. Permanent settlement began in 1952 with the founding of the Rose River Mission by local Aboriginal communities and the Church Missionary Society. The Mission operated until the 1970s when community control passed to the Numbulwar Numburindi Community Council. Elsey, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Elsey is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The locality’s name derived from the Elsey Creek whose watercourse is located within the locality and which was named by the explorer, Augustus Charles Gregory. The name is ultimately derived from John Ravenscroft Elsey, a surgeon and naturalist, who was a member of Gregory’s expedition to Northern Australia during 1856. The locality of Elsey fully surrounds both the community of Jilkminggan and the locality of Mataranka. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. Daly Waters is a town and locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south of the territory capital of Darwin at the intersection of the Carpentaria Highway and the Stuart Highway. The area's traditional owners, the Jingili people, believe the Dreaming tracks of the Emu and the Sun travelled through here on their way to the southern parts of the Northern Territory. History The name Daly Waters was given to a series of natural springs by John McDouall Stuart during his third attempt to cross Australia from south to north, in 1861–62. Stuart named the springs after the new Governor of South Australia, Sir Dominick Daly. Stuart's first attempt, in 1860, had reached Tennant Creek. Borroloola, Northern Territory
Borroloola ( local Aboriginal languages: ''Burrulula'') is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located on the McArthur River, about 50 km upstream from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Location Borroloola lies on the traditional country of the Yanyuwa people, on the coastal plain between the Barkly Tablelands and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Rivers that run from the Tablelands escarpment to the Gulf regularly flood in the wet season, making travel on the unsealed section of Highway One along the coastal plain to Queensland impossible. The rivers of this region have carved spectacular gorges through sandstone deposits in their upper reaches. Beswick Creek, Northern Territory
Barunga, formerly known as Beswick Creek and then Bamyili, is a small Aboriginal community located approximately southeast of Katherine, in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is part of the Roper Gulf Region local government area. At the , Barunga had a population of 313. In mid June each year, the Barunga Festival, a three-day event showcasing Australian Aboriginal culture, is held. At the 1988 event, the Barunga Statement, which requested a treaty between the Australian federal government and Indigenous Australians ( Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples), was presented to then prime minister Bob Hawke. Birdum is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south of the territory capital of Darwin. History Railway Birdum was the terminus of the North Australia Railway from 1929 until the outbreak of World War II. While the town remains very much unheard of, even amongst Territorians, it features on an unusually high proportion of vintage 20th century world globes, thanks to the position it once held at the end of the line. From World War II onwards trains terminated at Larrimah, nine kilometres to the north, and Birdum lost not only its position of importance but also its pub, which was uprooted and shifted to Larrimah as a result.
