The Diocese of Thanh Hóa ( la, Dioecesis de Thanh Hoa) is a Roman Catholic diocese of Vietnam. The bishop since 2018 is Joseph Nguyễn Đức Cường. Of the three million persons living in its area about 3% are Roman Catholics. The diocese covers an area of 11,168 km², and is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Hà Nôi. It was erected on May 7, 1932 as a Vicariate Apostolic. On November 24, 1960 it was elevated to a diocese. History In the later organization of the Roman Empire, the increasingly subdivided provinces were administratively associated in a larger unit, the diocese (Latin ''dioecesis'', from the Greek term διοίκησις, meaning "administration"). Suffragan Diocese
A suffragan diocese is one of the dioceses other than the metropolitan archdiocese that constitute an ecclesiastical province. It exists in some Christian denominations, in particular the Catholic Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, and the Romanian Orthodox Church. In the Catholic Church, although such a diocese is governed by its own bishop or ordinary, who is the suffragan bishop, the metropolitan archbishop has in its regard certain rights and duties of oversight.
