The Rockdale County School District (also referred to as ''Rockdale County Public Schools'' or ''RCPS'' for short) is a public school district in Rockdale County, Georgia, United States, based in Conyers. It serves the communities of Conyers and Lakeview Estates. The current superintendent is Dr. Terry Oatts, who has been in this position since 2018. Conyers, Georgia
Conyers is an Atlanta suburb, the county seat of and only city in Rockdale County, Georgia, United States. The city is 24 miles (38.6 km) east of downtown Atlanta and is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 15,195. The formerly separate town of Milstead is now part of Conyers. History Between 1816 and 1821, the area known as Rockdale was open for settlement. John Holcomb, a blacksmith, was the first settler in what is now Conyers. He settled where the current Rockdale County Courthouse is located, in the middle of Conyers on Main Street. Eventually, pressure arose for a railroad to cross Georgia; the railroad was intended to run from Augusta, through neighboring Covington to Marthasville (now known as Atlanta). Rockdale County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 93,570 up from 85,215 in 2010. The county seat is Conyers. Rockdale County is included in the ''Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area''. History Rockdale County was created on October 18, 1870 and received its name from Rockdale Baptist Church (est. 1846), which was named after the granite strata that rests under the county's red clay top soil. A bill introduced by John F. Hardin and John Harris carved Rockdale out of the northern portion of Newton County; parts of Rockdale County also came from neighboring Henry, Walton, Gwinnett, and DeKalb counties. Lakeview Estates, Georgia
Lakeview Estates, also known as Sunrise Lakes by local residents, is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rockdale County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,637 at the 2000 census. Lakeview Estates was developed as a family community in the 1970s consisting of modular homes wrapping around the hills above Lake Sunrise and Lake Rockaway. A community club house, water processing plant, community store, and church were built in addition to the community. It is not a trailer park, as much of the land is privately owned, or owned by multiple landlords, and all of the roads are owned and maintained by the county. The original idea for the community was not a success. The affordable real estate was bought out by families and by landlords. In addition, the water processing plant was privately owned. Heritage High School (Conyers, Georgia)
Heritage High School is one of three public secondary schools in Rockdale County in Conyers, Georgia, United States (the others being Rockdale County High School and Salem High School), under the Rockdale County School District. Heritage High School is home of the Patriots. It has twice been named a School of Excellence. In December 2009, ''U.S. News & World Report'' gave Heritage High School a silver medal ranking in the top 500 high schools in the nation. In 2014 Heritage High School became an Academy for Performing and Visual Arts. Rockdale County High School is located in the heart of Conyers, Georgia, United States, in the old-town district. RCHS is one of three high schools located in Rockdale County, along with Heritage High School, and Salem High School. RCHS also hosts the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, which is sponsored by Georgia Tech. The school's mascot is the Bulldog. Approximately 2,100 students are enrolled. Athletics Rockdale County High School is a part of the GHSA in Region 3-AAAAAA. In the 2008-2009, RCHS won Fox 5's High 5 Sports Team of the Week award twice, the first school ever to do so.
