Ri Jae-il
Ri Jae-il ( ko, 리재일, 1935 – 4 February 2021) was a North Korean politician and a member of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers' Party of Korea as well as member of the Supreme People's Assembly. Biography Ri Jae il was born in 1935. He started his professional career as a journalist, he was the editor of the capital's daily Pyongyang Sinmun. Little is known about his civil and political career before 1992, when he became deputy director of one of the departments of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. In February 2001, he became chairman of the State Publishing Control Committee, the main office dealing with political censorship in North Korea's mass media. From May 2004 to 2014, Ri Jae-il was the first deputy director in the Propaganda and Agitation Department in the Central Committee, which was managed by Ri Il-hwan. Propaganda And Agitation Department
The Propaganda and Agitation Department (PAD, ), officially translated as the Publicity and Information Department, is a department of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) tasked with coordinating the creation and dissemination of propaganda in North Korea. It is the highest propaganda organization in the country. The history of the department can be traced back to the Soviet Civil Administration following the division of Korea in 1945. Agitation operations by the department reached their height in the years after the Korean War. Although nominally under the Central Committee of the WPK, the department reports directly to Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. Ri Il-hwan (, born 1960) is a North Korean politician, a member of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea, Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). He is currently the director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department (PAD) of the party. Early life Ri Il-hwan was born in 1960 in Pyongyang. He was educated at Kim Il-sung University and the Mangyongdae Revolutionary School. Career Ri was commander of a "Speed Campaign" for the League of Socialist Working Youth of Korea (later Kim Il-sung Socialist Youth League, KISYL) in 1992. Death And Funeral Of Kim Jong-il
The death of Kim Jong-il was reported by North Korean state television news on 19 December 2011. The presenter Ri Chun-hee announced that he had died on 17 December at 8:30 am of a massive heart attack while travelling by train to an area outside Pyongyang. Reportedly, he had received medical treatment for cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases, and during the trip, Kim was said to have had an "advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated with a serious heart shock". However, it was reported in December 2012 by South Korean media that the heart attack had instead occurred in a fit of rage over construction faults in a crucial power plant project at Huichon in Chagang Province. 2009 North Korean Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in North Korea on 8 March 2009 to elect the members of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly. They were originally scheduled to be held in August 2008 but were postponed for unknown reasons. Observers of North Korea speculated that it was in relation to Kim Jong-il's ill health. All candidates standing in the elections in North Korea were members of one of the parties comprising the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. The Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea ( ko, 조선로동당 중앙위원회) is the highest party body between national meetings of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), the ruling party of North Korea. According to WPK rules, the Central Committee is elected by the party congress and the party conference can be conferred the right to renew its membership composition. In practice, the Central Committee has the ability to dismiss and appoint new members without consulting with the wider party at its own plenary sessions. The 1st Central Committee was elected at the 1st WPK Congress in 1946. It was composed of 43 members. The numbers of Central Committee members have increased since then, with the 7th Congress in 2017 electing 235 members. The title has not been written into the national constitution as a separate office, but it currently states that the president of the State Affairs Commission is the supreme leader of North Korea. Supreme People's Assembly
The Supreme People's Assembly (SPA; ) is the unicameral legislature of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly known as North Korea. It consists of one deputy from each of the DPRK's 687 constituencies, elected to five-year terms. The constitution identifies the SPA as the "highest organ of state power" and all state positions, including the President of the State Affairs and the Premier of the Cabinet, trace their authority to it. The Assembly typically does not legislate directly, but delegates that task to a smaller Standing Committee.
