Restless Eyes
''Restless Eyes'', released in 1981, is the twelfth studio album by singer/songwriter Janis Ian, and her last album for Columbia Records, although at the time Ian had a contract with the label for four further albums. At the time of ''Restless Eyes'', Janis Ian had completely disappeared from the United States charts – her previous album ''Night Rains'' had not even dented the '' Billboard'' Top 200 despite a re-release during the summer of 1980 and a big push by Columbia who had originally released it on a glutted US market in September 1979. Nevertheless, her efforts to adopt a highly commercial pop sound plus a new focus on writing film music had gained ''Night Rains'' significant success outside North America. Janis Ian (born Janis Eddy Fink; April 7, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter who was most commercially successful in the 1960s and 1970s. Her signature songs are the 1966/67 hit "Society's Child, Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" and the 1975 Top Ten single "At Seventeen", from her LP ''Between the Lines (Janis Ian album), Between the Lines'', which in September 1975 reached no. 1 on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' album chart. The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent (historian), David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. "At Seventeen" is a song by American singer-songwriter Janis Ian from her seventh studio album ''Between the Lines''. Columbia released it in July 1975 as the album's second single. Ian wrote the lyrics on the basis of a ''The New York Times'' article and used a samba instrumental, and Brooks Arthur produced the final version. A pop and soft rock ballad, the song is about a social outcast in high school. Critics have regarded "At Seventeen" as a type of anthem. Background Its lyrics concern an interracial romance – a still-taboo subject in mid-1960s America. Ian was 13 years of age when she was motivated to write and compose the song, and she completed it when she was 14. Released as "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)", the single charted high in many cities in the autumn of 1966 but did not hit big nationally until the summer of 1967.
