Respeto
''Respeto'' (''Respect'') is a 2017 Philippine drama independent film starring Filipino hip hop artist Abra, and directed by Alberto "Treb" Monteras II. It was co-written by Monteras and screenwriter Njel de Mesa, who drew inspiration from the works of veteran poets such as Vim Nadera and National Artists Bienvenido Lumbera and Virgilio Almario. The final film features a guest cameo appearance by poet Vim Nadera. Aside from Abra and de la Paz, the film co-stars Chai Fonacier, Ybes Bagadiong, Brian Arda, Thea Yrastorza, Kate Alejandrino, Nor Domingo and Filipino rapper Loonie. Plot Hendrix is a poor aspiring rapper who wants to make a name for himself in the underground rap battle scene and gain respect in the community. After attempting to rob a second-hand bookstore in the neighborhood, he is discovered by the owner, Doc, an old poet with a haunted past as a dissident. 2017 Cinemalaya Film Festival
The 13th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival was held from August 4–13, 2017 in Metro Manila, Philippines. A total of nine full-length features and twelve short films competed. Treb Monteras II
Alberto "Treb" Monteras II is a Filipino Film director and music video director. He is best known for his work on the film Respeto. Monteras has amassed a large number music video credits directing music videos for Bamboo, Rivermaya, Sugarfree, Hale, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and Regine Velasquez among other notable artists. Life and career Monteras graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Advertising and pursued his passion for filmmaking and studied at the Mowelfund Film Institute, and at the International Institute for Film and the Arts. Chai Fonacier (born December 25, 1986) is a Filipina actress, singer, writer and songwriter. Career Music Fonancier was a contestant of the first season of ''Pinoy Dream Academy''. She was also a part of the defunct Cebu-based trip hop trio Womb with Anthony Uy and Fender Figuera. Raymond Abracosa (born December 2, 1990), better known as Abra, is a Filipino rapper, hip hop recording artist and occasional actor. He gained mainstream popularity with his song "Gayuma". When the video reached more than 26 million views on YouTube, it was hailed as the highest number generated by any local artist. Before that, he is a well-known battle emcee in the FlipTop Battle League. Career His career started as a member of Pinoy hip hop group Lyrically Deranged Poets (LDP) in 2010. The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a film festival in the Philippines held annually during the month August at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and various cinemas. Its aim is the development and promotion of Filipino independent films. The film festival is organized by the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. with the support of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Econolink Investments, Inc. ''Balagtasan'' is a Filipino form of debate done in verse. Derived from the name of Francisco Balagtas, this art presents a type of literature in which thoughts or reasoning are expressed through speech. The first balagtasan took place in the Philippines on April 6, 1924, created by groups of writers to commemorate the birth of Francisco Balagtas. They made the first balagtasan with three sets of poets presenting a scripted defense. They based the form on earlier types of debates that also used poetic elements such as ''karagatan'', ''huwego de prenda'' and, ''duplo''. Virgilio Senadrin Almario (born March 9, 1944), better known by his pen name Rio Alma, is a Filipino visual artist, author, poet, critic, translator, editor, teacher, and cultural manager. He is a National Artist of the Philippines.
