Rebecca Solomon
Rebecca Solomon (London 26 September 1832 – 20 November 1886 London) was a 19th-century English Pre-Raphaelite draftsman, illustrator, engraver, and painter of social injustices. She is the second of three children who all became artists, in a prominent Jewish family. Biography Rebecca Solomon was born on 26 September 1832, the youngest of the three daughters, and she was one of eight children born into an artistically-inclined Jewish merchant family in Bishopsgate in east London. Her father was Michael (Meyer) Solomon, the first Jew to be honoured with the Freedom of the City of London; her mother was Catherine (Kate) Levy. Solomon was the lesser-known artist to her painter brothers Simeon Solomon (1840–1905) and Abraham Solomon (1824–1862). Royal Society Of British Artists
The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) is a British art body established in 1823 as the Society of British Artists, as an alternative to the Royal Academy. History The RBA commenced with twenty-seven members, and took until 1876 to reach fifty. Artists wishing to resign were required to give three months' notice and pay a fine of £100. The RBA's first two exhibitions were held in 1824, with one or two exhibitions held annually thereafter. The RBA currently has 115 elected members who participate in an annual exhibition currently held at the Mall Galleries in London. The Society's previous gallery was a building designed by John Nash in Suffolk Street. Queen Victoria granted the Society the Royal Charter in 1887. Rosa Corder
Rosa Frances Corder (18 May 1853 – 28 November 1893) was a Victorian artist and artist's model. She was the lover of Charles Augustus Howell, who is alleged to have persuaded her to create forgeries of drawings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Career Corder was the daughter of Micah Corder (1808–88), a London merchant, and Charlotte Hill. Fanny Corbaux
Marie Françoise Catherine Doetger "Fanny" Corbaux (1812–1883) was a British painter and biblical commentator. She was also the inventor of kalsomine (calcimine), whitewash with added zinc oxide. Life Corbaux was born in Paris, the daughter of Francis Corbaux, an English-born statistician and mathematician, the author of the ''Dictionnaire des Arbitrages des Changes'', and the ''Doctrine of Compound Interest'', who spent much of his life abroad. Margaret Sarah Carpenter
Margaret Sarah Carpenter ('' née'' Geddes; 1793 – 13 November 1872) was an English painter. Noted in her time, she mostly painted portraits in the manner of Sir Thomas Lawrence. She was a close friend of Richard Parkes Bonington. Early life Carpenter was born in Salisbury, the daughter of Captain Alexander Geddes, who was of an Edinburgh family, and Harriet Easton. She was taught art by a local drawing-master. Her first art studies were made from the pictures at Longford Castle, belonging to the Earl of Radnor. Career In 1812, one of Carpenter's copies of the head of a boy was awarded a medal by the Society of Arts, who awarded her another medal in 1813, and a gold medal in 1814. Joanna Mary Boyce
Joanna Mary Boyce (7 December 1831 – 15 July 1861) was a British painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. She is also known by her married name as Mrs. H.T. Wells, or as Joanna Mary Wells. She produced multiple works with historical themes, as well as portraits and sketches, and authored art criticism responding to her contemporaries. She was the sister of Pre-Raphaelite watercolourist George Price Boyce. Barbara Bodichon
Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (born Barbara Leigh Smith; 8 April 1827 – 11 June 1891) was an English educationalist and artist, and a leading mid-19th-century feminist and women's rights activist. She published her influential ''Brief Summary of the Laws of England concerning Women'' in 1854 and the '' English Woman's Journal'' in 1858. Bodichon co-founded Girton College, Cambridge (1869). Her brother was the Arctic explorer Benjamin Leigh Smith. Maria Bell
Lady Maria Bell (''née'' Hamilton; 26 December 17559 March 1825) was an English amateur painter (in oils) and sculptor. Life Maria Hamilton was born in Chelsea, London, the daughter of William Hamilton, an architect from a Scottish family, and his wife Sarah. She was the pupil of her brother William Hamilton (painter), William Hamilton Royal Academy, RA. She also received instruction from Sir Joshua Reynolds, whose pictures she copied with much skill. Ann Charlotte Bartholomew
Ann Charlotte Bartholomew (1800–1862), was an English flower and miniature painter, and author. Life Bartholomew was born on 20 March 1800 in Loddon, Norfolk, the daughter of Arnall Fayermann and niece of John Thomas, bishop of Rochester. In 1827 she married the composer Walter Turnbull who died in 1838. In 1840 she published ''Songs of Azrael'' and other poems under the name of Mrs. Turnbull. In the same year she became the second wife of the flower painter, Valentine Bartholomew. After this, she began painting still-life fruits and flowers. Mary Baker (fl. 1842 – 1856) was an English painter of portraits and portrait miniatures. She was born in London and produced works for the Society of Arts, as well as exhibiting miniatures and portraits at the Royal Academy over a fourteen-year period (1842–1856). Sophie Gengembre Anderson (1823 – 10 March 1903) was a French-born British artist who specialised in genre painting of children and women, typically in rural settings. She began her career as a lithographer and painter of portraits, collaborating with Walter Anderson on portraits of American Episcopal bishops.
