Rwanda Basketball Cup
The Rwanda Basketball Cup is a basketball cup competition for men's teams in Rwanda. The competition is made up of teams from the Rwanda Basketball League as well as the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2. The tournament was introduced in 2024 by the FERWABA, and APR was the inaugural winner. The winners of the competition qualify for the East Africa Cup, a future FIBA-organised tournament. Format The cup competition begins with a group stage with the lowest ranked teams from the Rwanda Basketball League and the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2. The winner of each group advances to the playoffs, which is played in single-elimination format. The semifinals and finals are held over one weekend, and a third place game is played as well. FERWABA
The Rwandan Basketball Federation () is the governing body of basketball in Rwanda. It operates the Rwanda national basketball team as well as the National Basketball League (Rwanda), top-tier NBL and other amateur leagues. History In 1930, basketball was first brought to Rwanda by catholic priests and the first games were played in high schools in the South Province. After the independence in 1962, new teams were created in the army and from some public institutions. 2024 Rwanda Basketball Cup
The 2024 Rwanda Basketball Cup was the inaugural season of the Rwanda Basketball Cup, the cup competition for men's teams in Rwanda. It is organised by FERWABA, the national basketball association. The first games were played on 26 April 2024, while the playoffs began on 9 July 2024, and ended end on 9 August 2024. The first season consisted of 21 teams from the Rwanda Basketball League as well as the Rwanda Basketball League Division 2. The first four teams from the 2023 RBL season received direct qualification for the quarterfinals, while the other teams entered the group phase. APR won the inaugural cup title after defeating REG in the final. The winners qualified for the inaugural Rwanda Basketball Supercup, which will be held later in the year. Rwanda Basketball League
The Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) (formerly the National Basketball League Rwanda) is the top professional basketball league in Rwanda. Its season usually runs from November to September. The winners of the NBL season qualify for the BAL Qualifying Tournaments, qualifiers for the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The league currently consists of 10 teams, most of them being from the country's capital Kigali. The current champion of the RBL are APR BBC, APR, who are the league’s most decorated team with a record 15 championships. Other notable teams are REG BBC, REG and their rivals Patriots BBC, Patriots, who have been powerhouses in recent years. The Rwanda Basketball League Division 2 is the second-highest men's basketball competition in Rwanda, after the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL). Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Basketball Club, commonly known simply as APR, is a Rwandan basketball club based in Kigali. Owned and funded by the Ministry of Defence of Rwanda, the team plays in the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) and in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) for the 2024 season. Nicknamed the "Lions", the team is the most decorated team in the country, as APR has won a record 15 national championships. History Originating during the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF)'s liberation struggle during the Rwandan Civil War in 1993, the club was established to serve as a means to engage and occupy soldiers during a ceasefire amid the peace talks that eventually led to the signing of the Arusha Accords. East Africa Cup (basketball)
The East Africa Cup (EAC) is one of two domestic cricket competitions launched by Cricket Kenya in the aftermath of the Kenya national cricket team's disastrous showing at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. It is a 50 over competition that features 6 franchises, 4 from Kenya and 2 from Uganda, that compete against each other home and away in a league before the two teams that come top in the league square off in a final. Rwanda Energy Group BBC, commonly known as REG, is a Rwandan basketball club based in Kigali. It is owned and named after the company Rwanda Energy Group Limited. It plays in the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL), the highest tier of basketball in Rwanda. REG has won the national championship thrice, in 2017, 2021 and 2022. Patriots Basketball Club, also known as Patriots, is a professional basketball club based in Kigali, Rwanda. Established in 2014, it plays its home games at Amahoro Indoor Stadium. The team is a four-time champion of the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL). In the 2021 season, the Patriots played in the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Basketball In Rwanda
In Rwanda, sport is supported by the government's Sports Development Policy of October 2012. This argues that sport has a number of benefits, including bringing people together, improving national pride and unity, and improving health. The policy identifies challenges to the development of sport in the country, including limited infrastructure and financial capacity.
